computer nerds, geeks, so so, and the dumbfounded

ok I am one of those types of people who don't know very much about the computers.... I can type a paper surf the internet and other like tasks.... This thread is to basically tell who you are in the lineup of computers....

1.) you are a computer nerd if you know everything there is to possibly know about computers. This meaning that you would know how to completely reprogram a computer, rebuild a computer and practically build a computer from nothing.

2.) You are a computer geek if you know the in's and out's of most major programs on a computer but you haven't quite gotten to the level of being able to build a computer from scratch.

3.) You are so so in computers if you know how to do the basic typing of papers, surfing the internet and etc.

4.) You are completely dumbfounded with computers if you don't even know how to turn the computer on.


I am number three.... I am so so at computers....

Which one are you in the list of computer technologies?

I'd put myself at 2, I built my PC (bought the components and assembled it myself) but I'm not so strong on the whole software thing.

I don't know if I classify myself in anyone of those categories reason being is that I can do everything in one, but since the field is always changing and advancing, I see myself as always learning and being lost in new technologies when they come around.

I work for a Software company that gets all the newest hardware before it goes public as well as software. I currently support the company's technical support deparment analysts (The people who give techincal support to our customers) and setup their Windows, Linux, UNIX, AIX, HP-UX, SAN, NAS, Oracle, SQL, Informix, DB1, DB2, PostgreSQL, VI, Networks, Firewalls, Blade Centers, Virtualization Farms etc.... environments and there is always something every day that I am lost in.

What do you mean build it from scratch?

I can build it if you give me the components like the vid card, harddrive etc. with some tinkering. (Its not like automatic to me but I can figure it out)

But if you are talking about starting from the silicone. . . then nope I can't do it.

So I'm either a 2 or a 3 depending on how you define "from scratch"

Depends on what "from scratch" means.

I cannot put together the electrical components of a motherboard for instance, with the exception of some basic repairs I can do to damaged or disconnected components.

If you are talking about buliding a computer from existing components, that is of course a piece of cake. I've done that a lot.

In programming, I know more than 2 but less than 1. I couldn't program an OS from the ground up, but I could program many kinds of software from the ground up, though it has been so long that it would take me considerable time with reference books to get back into it (I did go to school for IT and programming).

I'm a repairman specializing in power tools, so really anything with a schematic I can wire pretty much anything without any difficulty, and easily gain understanding of all the installation components. I don't have a whole lot of programming experience or knowledge however. That and I hate building circuit boards, I'm no good at them.

I'm a 3. Capable of writing, using USB devices, and employing choice words; but once people start talking about the nitty gritty of computers, I slip into Yo no comprende mode.

ok from scratch I don't mean you have to create the motherboard... From scratch (just like baking cookies or a cake) I mean taking the ingredients and putting them together....

It's kinda funny because building a computer is a heck of a lot easier than programming, which I know jack about.

Somewhere between 1 and 2, I'd guess. Although my knowledge of software isn't automatic, it's just natural acclimatizing, and by no means are a list of 'major programs' set in stone (it's just a matter of which gets the job done for me - I don't really like a full-featured Word Processor because I can get by just fine with Notepad or Wordpad; simplicity has its downsides as well - I can't accept the dynamics of video software like Windows Movie Maker because they're just so limited and irritating, I need something where I have intimate control like Adobe Premiere or After Effects). I can figure it out on my own, or can figure it out with little reference to go by. And if you consider any sort of scripting (whether OS scripting like BAT files, or software-based like AviSynth) in the 1 category rather than 2, then it is a mesh of the two.

As far as assembly is concerned, I have to read a manual except for those very routine tasks like opening up a case and swapping out a hard drive or something, whereas trying to mount something within a case from scratch seems daunting to me.

I can't program, though - I'd like to know how so I could have something to fall back on if I can't find the right tool for a particular task, but it's sort of a latent interest (that and I hate advanced math with a passion, and programming often seems to be very math-centered to me). If I were to get into programming, I'd want to pursue standard C due to being so widely cross-platform.

I know tidbits of useful stuff, tho not the kind Bill Gates would be recruiting to program the next WINDOWS OS...yet..tho I am desprately learning..or trying to. I love computers<3

Ohhhh... IT is my dream career field, I would like to take actual community college classes in a few years for IT and Network management. My ultimate dream job is to work as a Network administrator or a help desk specialist. but normally IT takes 2-4 years of college to obtian a degree. But its something I plan on trying to accomplish, furthering my learning is one of my main future goals. I pray that with God's help I can fulfill my aspirtaions career-wise.

I can make a computer do what I need it to for college stuff and basic CAD (I'm an engineering student), and I could/can mess with the components on a basic level, thought I'm more mechanical-y than computer-y.
