I wrote this before the problem was solved.
I agree. If the monitor goes blank and it's power button turns orange, it's not getting a signal from the video card anymore. I would uninstall and reinstall your video drivers first. If that fails to work, you may be having a hardware problem. Try swapping the video card (if it's not integrated into the motherboard) with one that you know works. It could also be a power supply issue as Doc suggested. During game play your card will use a large amount of power, at this point it could overheat and turn itself off, or the powersupply isn't supplying enough power which messes the card up.

I really hope it was your video card overheating, not the CPU. If it was the CPU running at that temperature, you're probably lucky the CPU is still working and it probably is running at limited capacity. Due to a malfunctioing power supply, my old CPU overheated to around boiling point. After replacing the power supply, it still worked, but it was obviously messed up.
