compulsive masturbation

I can't believe I'm actually writing about this.
I have a history of emotional and possible sexual abuse. I don't like to actually have sex, I actually find it kind of revolting, but I do touch, sometimes up to 3 times a day. I usually have fantasies about being in personally humiliating and degrading situations while I touch.
For both religious and personal reasons I want this to stop. I have been able to cut down a lot but not stop completely. I can't ask my therapist for help, because it would be way to awkward.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this stop?

Masturbation is common after sexual abuse, generally due to one's sexuality being awakened. Your thinking while masturbating seems to be a re-imaging of your past abuse, as that will be the associations with your sexuality as your primary memories of sex.

Re-imaging sex after abuse can be a difficult process and you might need some help with that. That might be more important for now than focusing on stopping masturbation. It may be a two step process for you, which I find is not uncommon.

Try to think of having a wholesome relationship but don't touch to that. It is a better way to think and you can change the degrading image into a healthy one. It takes a lot of practice so give yourself plenty of time on this. Maybe find something else to do when you get the urge to touch, like a new hobby you really like and or do some kind of church ministry work. I hope this helps. God bless you.

Try memorizing a hymn and have that mentally playing in your head when you feel tempted. Usually does the trick for me.

Statistically determined, it is a common issue. I agree with posters above on doing godly things and gathering his Spirit this way in order to force out the evil spirit of lust (Eph 5:18). Understand that there is the evil spirit and the good spirit both inhabiting the body. "What the flesh wants is contrary to what the Spirit wants, and what the Spirit wants is contrary to what the flesh wants. These are opposed to each other. As a result, you don't always do what you intend to do (Gal 5:17)." To let the Spirit win over the flesh, we need to fill ourselves full of the Spirit, by singing to the Lord as one example, letting him into your heart. "Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (Eph 5:18-20)"

Zoe, doing anything compulsively can be a sign of bigger troubles, and cosidering your background, it probably is.

I think you should set aside your feelings of reluctance and go see that therapist. Don't be embarrassed; he/she has no doubt dealt with people who've had bigger and more complex problems.

I have a similar problem... Anyway, I think the best thing to do is not think about it. I pray that we can all be healed of our addictions/compulsions one day.

I happened to come online today, and saw your post. I could not go away without trying to help you. I was enslaved to masturbation for 8 long years. By the way - I grew up as a Christian and went to church regularly. I reached a point like you - where I was so disgusted with this sin. I know that this sin is so humiliating.
