Hi these are some semi abstract seascapes done plein air over the past few weeks. The second to last was done yesterday and the last was done today. We are getting some killer surf. They vary from 11x14 to 12x16 Watercolor on yupo except the top two have acrylic in the waves.

these are beautiful! I love the movement that you capture with the brushstrokes. It makes the scenes look very dynamic.

Thank you! :) I use a free program called Krita; I enjoy its variety of brushes and find it to be very intuitive to use. I paint on my laptop using Krita and a tablet & tablet pen.

I have heard good things about Krita, but don't know a lot of details. Does it work like Photoshop, or does it try to mimic natural media more?

What type of stylus?

Wow; I love that you have the function to record your process with that program! I love watching other artists' painting process.

Yeah, there several artists that I have watched the videos for a large part of their gallery to see their technique. And everyone does things a little differently. Some block it out in paint, some use lines, etc.

I think it looks stunning! I love the effect you have of the flower popping off the page. I've never worked with colored pencils before myself; it seems like it would be hard to blend colors?

I'm glad you like it.

Colored pencils don't blend like, say, graphite does, or oil or acrylic paints do. You can get colored pencils to blend a bit, sort of... The trade off is that colored pencils are comparatively cheap, easy to use, and require no clean-up after using. I like that.

I would say it's closer to Photoshop! It has pretty much all the same features. But it also has a lot of brush presets for if you want to mimic a natural media (like watercolor-style brushes, or oil paint brushes). I am still new to digital, so I mostly have been keeping it simple with the features I use. I tend to just use a couple brushes, erasers, and do use layering as well! It's a pretty cool program; I definitely recommend it if you're ever interested!

I use a Huion Inspiroy tablet and stylus.

Oh that is nice! I appreciate easy clean-up. I'm super messy with paints, lol! My favorite medium is oil paint, and it is so easy to get everything covered in paint! Plus, there's a lot of clean-up with oil paints. Watercolor is simpler, but that too does require more setting up than colored pencils, by the sounds of it. I do want to give colored pencils a go at some point.

I struggle with colored pencils, but they are neater than using paints. I like to work fast and colored pencils make that difficult. On the other hand my wife and daughters love them.

One in-between option is to get watercolor pencils. Then you can sketch when on the go, and later go back with a water brush and activate the paint to use your watercolor techniques.

This way you get the convenience of colored pencils, less mess than a full paint set up, and the look and speed of watercolor.

Cool! Do you plan on doing more digital art, now that you got a feel for it?

I haven’t did anything since I did that painting. Frankly I don’t think I’m any good or can get “good”. I know practice makes prefect and the usual lines. I’m just confused on where to start.

The place to start in my view is always to learn to see better. Study how light works, how things look. Then try to imitate it.

But then again, kind of depends on whether you want to invest the time.
