Even though the President this character served under was supposedly a Republican, I feel that the whole reason for this show (and the reason it attracted heavyweights Sutherland and Davis) is to prepare the voting public to accept the idea of a female President -- namely Hillary Clinton. They made some main characters conservatives to ease in the idea and to make the main character sympathetic when staff members dissed her.

That's a real stretch for me, after all the idea of a women in office is nothing new. I do like the show, the casting is great. Geena Davis and Donald Southerland I have always liked and was glad to see them appearing in a weekly tv show.
