  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I like a lot of comedy, but a lot of what I like is offensive to some
-sarah silverman, kathy griffin, south park, dumb+dumber etc

Have yet to hear a "christian" comic that wasn't boring and/or corny.
eg #1 bill cosby

Not surprising though-the bible's the most serious book I've read

i dont know if anyone has mentioned him yet but if you haven't already get and watch one of Brian Regan's standup routines

he is by far the funniest and surprisingly the cleanest comedian out there today.

Radhead, I agree with you in a lot of circumstances. Many people who think they're funny aren't, but are instead are just mocking others. However, it is not a good idea to toss all comedy completely away because of this.

I am currently wrestling with,"Are video games that involve pointless fighting something that a Christian should be playing?" I am a big fan of fighting in video games, but at the same time, fighting with no motive isn't really something a Christian should do in reality. So is it ok to do in a video game? Maybe, maybe not. The key is that Christians should not expose themselves to the bad stuff like GTA or Postal, and the other stuff is grey areas.

It boils down to,"Is it spiritually damaging to do stuff in a video game that would be bad for me to do in real life?" Just like you are waking up to the idea that there is bad comedy, there is something little known as bad fantasy. Bad fantasy is something like when a person envisions oneself liking the villain in a horror film. God does not approve of evil. When you desire to be evil in your heart, God doesn't like that.

You forgot "Calvin and Hobbes". Anyway, the Far Side was pretty mean spirited and morbid.

Calvin & Hobbes is what I'd call "cute", not really fall-down-laughing funny.

Edit: Far Side reference put back : e.g. a panel where the boss of a marble factory comes out of his office after someone yells 'Simmons has lost his marbles" referring to a spree shooter.

I know some of his strips were considered inappropriate. I never saw the one you mentioned. But so many of them were sooo funny it was almost painful, lol.

Edit: it's sad what happened with the Garfield strips. the old strips were awesome, and not all of them were comedic. Now it's just a series of fat jokes.

Yeah...sadly, Garfield lost his funniness somewhere in the late 80's. The strips between 1978 and 1985 are probably the best. Now it's just Jim Davis coming up with whatever he can because it's expected and he makes millions.

Hey, I like ATHF.

But yeah, most people confuse stupidity with randomness.

haha.. You are too cool man. Too cool indeed. :ebil: Reps for ATHF.

LOL oh my gosh guys. I think ATHF is hilarious. Well, mostly Master Shake and Carl. I mean, it can be downright stupid and weird at times but when you don't have anything to watch and it's midnight, it comes in handy.

I love Kevin James. I'm not bonkers about "King Of Queens", but it is a decently funny show. But I've seen him do stand up and he just about had me peeing myself, and the great thing was, there wasn't one foul or crass joke coming out of his mouth. It was all just outrageously hilarious.

I have mixed reviews about "Whose Line Is It Anyway". I can't STAND Drew Carey. I hate the musical skits that they do. I could do without the potty humor they sometimes fall into. But omgosh...some of the stuff from the comics on stage has me falling on the floor. Wayne Brady is freakin hilarious in his impressions. Colin and Ryan can do improv like nobody's business, and they have this middle-aged-geek chemistry that is just too much.

Here is a great clip from the interview showing the idiotic Mr Black. Unfortunately this brief clip doesn't show the depth of his lowness (because he was being challenged in a good way).

But after hearing this again, I can't help but think that all of Lewis Black's fans are idiots as well.

A great thing happened today. I was listening to NPR today and comedian Lewis Black was being interviewed. Someone called in and told him that they didn't like his humor at all. It was demeaning to Christians and Jews, for one thing. That totally threw Mr Black off track in his interview. Even after the guy hung up he admitted that he was still angry at him. The best part (to me) is that the NPR host was unable to hang up on the guy while he was talking. There was some kind of technical foul-up that enable the guy to speak a lot longer than they would have allowed. I loved it.

what? Do you expect me to give this guy a gold medal? This type of additude is shameful....

as for "not offending people". People are far to sensitive and selfish and spoiled. Half the crap they hear that "offends them" they probably NEED to hear because of how true it probably is! :|

"there's nothing rebellious about that. People pleasing does more harm than good. Infact no good ever comes of it at all!"

I don't know where you are coming from because I've never heard you make jokes like that. I'm not talking about pleasing men, but following God's word. I try to follow the one in my signature, but I don't always succeed. ("Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." Ephesians 4:2.)

well yeah I understand that :) but I'd say calling in a random hotline because what is being said on a station "offends you" is probably not being very humble, or patient, or bearing with others in love.

I agree that Christian comedians can be corny, and that secular comics can be very funny. The interesting thing is that usually the bits I find the most funny from "regular" comics, is their clean stuff- it's usually quite clever. I wish there were more clever Christian comedians
