One police officer standing on the roof of a building 130 yards away from where the Republican candidate would have prevented the shooting. How could you NOT have someone on top of building with a clear line of sight?

I have heard several American experts saying the secret service did a great job, a fantastic job, best job, best guys ever, top in the world etc.

However, I think they did a terrible job. Not the ones who immediately shielded Trump with their bodies. But before and after that, several serious amateurish errors.

1. The most dangerous building - uncovered.
- neither personally, nor by a drone, not even the counter snipers on the roofs were watching it
2. A person with a long gun was able to get to place and to go to roof and no security or police noticed
3. Trump was uncovered several times during the walk down from the podium, namely his head; they allowed him to make gestures

Yes, I am no security expert but wouldn't the secret service always look for the highest point of view and survey all possible vulnerable areas before the event even begins? This should not have happened.

Even though I do not like Trump (or Biden either), this was a sad day, and a colossal failure by the secret service for not installing acrylic glass to shield Trump. Hopefully, no future incident ever happens again. Personally, all buildings within 200 yards of a presidential rally should be temporarily inhabited with police in the hallways and outside windows until the rally is over. At least the secret service quickly rescued Trump. Pray for the safety of all political candidates regardless of affiliation and for Trump's quick healing.

In summary, put guys on top of buildings, and use drones to patrol the skies during large events or rallies.

For reference, 130 yards is 119 meters for our European brethren.

He didn’t climb up there until after the event had already started. The building in question was private property outside the venue, so I imagine their capacity to lock it down would’ve been somewhat limited.

Yeah, its a distance children in elementary schools are sprinting for time (OK, 19 meters longer).

Yeah, 19 meters longer. I had to run 800 meters and 1600 meters for a track and field club in 2016, and maybe one 100 meters one also, so it gives a sense of scale. 119 meters is really close. The secret service should have secured the buildings better. Anyways, I am off to church, but my prayers are for the safety of everyone.

Seriously, you folks in the peanut gallery should just shut up until a complete investigation is done. No one here is a secret service agent, security "expert" or has any experience in site security.

And it wouldn't surprise me a bit for the conspiracy-theory loons to start posting their nonsense on this forum.

Gee, I can't wait....
I do agree also that we should wait until an official investigation report, but you could have worded this reply in a friendlier manner, brother. Yes, I can be quick to judge also, but in confession yesterday, I told the priest about how this can be my struggle. So, together, can we all be nicer to each other, Mr. Forbes? :)

It sure SEEMS to be way more negligent than I would have thought but I don't know that world very well.

I'll assume everyone with a lot of experience and knowledge in this subject is posting confidently all over the internet now.

They can lock down any building that they need to.

Source?

This was for a political rally for a candidate not in office, not an official government event. You need permits to even block out street parking. I imagine more than a few people getting testy if their businesses were locked down because the other guy was having a rally nearby.

Source? Showing they did not have jurisdiction?

Source that the Secret service needs permits?

Your imagination might just be incorrect.

The building was already vacant - all they had to do is post one police officer on the roof - assassination attempt thwarted.

You are right. The peanut gallery is a safe place to speculate on all sorts of things we actually know very little about... And anonymously.

There's some which are being interviewed on national media WHICH ARE and they're saying it was a security failure. Don't confuse the fact that his detail ran on stage and sought to protect his life as to mean all don't commend them for risking their lives to do so. That takes bravery! But how things were set up before the rally could be said to have failed.

What do you know of the Secret Service’s capacity to secure private facilities in the vicinity of the event? Do you know anything at all for certain or are you just assuming?

Noting the op is presenting his layman's, uninformed opinion...based on events that are not even 24 hours old. I will treat it as such...and wait for the Secret Service, DHS etc, to issue their findings. Hopefully, we can keep the nonsense consipriacies crap to a minumum.....

I'm sure we will find out more about it. Because the shooting is so widely perceived as a security failure someone will have some 'splainin' to do. I expect that a Congressional hearing is in the offing.
