  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This is where I went to school:

That's the computer science and math building for UNCG where I spent most of my time.

It was kind of boring sometimes but also a lot of fun and I'm glad I went.

College is in many ways what you make it to be. Go find pictures of any generic university and maybe I went there. Looking for thoughts on Christian schools though?

I'd love your advice. I am considering Bryan College in Dayton,TN.
I decided I only want to go to a christian college..Not because I may be tempted to do some things, but because I wont enjoy college if I'm stuck in a dorm with people who do things that are morally objectionable to me.

I'm not trying to be condescending at all here, but I'm just wondering if there's a specific college that you're thinking of where these things don't happen. I've heard of one or two in the US where Christian morals are actually enforced, and I suppose there might be some really small conservative colleges where things like sex and underage drinking are scarce, but in general, you'll find the same behaviors everywhere.

I know what you mean.. Ive seen some colleges where "Christian" is merely a name. But This one is different.. I can tell by the way the students act... They do missions trips, dress modestly, have choir..etc. Its not a big school. about 700-1,000. Its very Christ centered... What I appreciate is the worship seems very 'real' they don't try and go all crazy with the flashing lights and electric guitars, but they seem to be very humble and seeking christ. (Not saying those who like worship with flashing lights and electric guitars aren't humble).. its just more traditional.

Well, Pensacola Christian College here in Florida is one. My brother went there, my sis-in-law went there, and a couple friends went there, my bro-in-law went there, so I have inside testimony that such behavior truly is scarce. Almost nonexistent. And if it does happen, it would more than likely be happening well off campus.

I like that one. People think its oppressive. But, honestly.. They are mostly following biblical principals.

I agree. Sure, some people get a little irritated with some of the strictness that feels...a little over-the-top, and perhaps it is a bit. But overall, everyone I know who went there has mostly positive things to say about it. It really helped to mature them.

I would wonder what an exclusive christian school would do to someone who might disagree or question here or there while trying to learn. (exclusive in the sense that the authorities and students have a very narrow range of what they tolerate as Christian.) I prefer an inclusive school. (inclusive in the sense that they have a much wider range of what they tolerate and accept as Christian.)

I also look at classes that are actually available (not merely in the catalog) and see if they offer what I wish to study. I would also look at the professors, their background, and what they teach.

What do you wish to study? classes?

I am not sure if you would really like ACU then, most people here seem to think Pensacola is, not necessarily oppressive, but "over the top" when it comes to rules. While we have required chapel, and 4 required Bible classes (technically it's 3, the last one is an elective Bible), we're very loose compared to Pensacola: freshman and sophomore are required to live on campus, freshman have curfew (midnight on school nights), girls are only allowed in guys down and vice versa on Thursday nights from 6-11 (though there has been a push to expand this) and you have to keep the door open if you have a girl/guy, it's a dry campus, and apparently no premarital sex (though they can't enforce it off campus unless someone gets pregnant). That's about as strict as it gets. People sometimes complain about curfew and visitation, but for the most part, everyone pretty much thinks our rules are fair.

We're inclusive more than we're exclusive, partially because half the student body isn't the denomination we're school is affiliated with and professors are required to be. Partially because most professors try teach things from as neutral to everyone as possible, for example, Bible classes are academic studying of the Bible, not "here's what you should believe". In other words it's, "Romans was written by Paul in ____ (we think) for _____ reason. Due to that, here why _______ is said. The main points of Romans are ____, ____, ____, and _____. Here's how the points connect to his main point___________" not "Romans 1:17 is about ______ and here's what the means in today world, _____"

I've had the opportunity to attend both public and private universities. Here was my experience with both:

Public university - My time at the public university I attended was phenomenal. Some of that had to do with the fact that campus life was generally pretty fun, but the main reason was that I got involved in a campus ministry that helped my faith grow exponentially. The name of the ministry is Cru (formerly called Campus Crusade for Christ), and the ministry skills I developed and the fellowship I experienced (probably the closest friendships I will have in my life outside of my friendship with a possible future spouse) are things that I still benefit so much from. The friendships I had there ran so deep because we were united as believers trying to reach the campus as we lived, ate, studied, and had classes with non-Christians. I got to see fellows students' lives profoundly changed by the Lord, and it was pretty incredible to witness. Also, campus rules are more laid back, so you aren't necessarily limited as far as what type of clothing you wear or having a curfew or anything like that.
The flip side of that is that you will encounter lots of people who go out and party every weekend. You'll also encounter all different kids of belief systems, but I really believe that this prepares you for real life in a sense. You most likely (and hopefully) won't be spending your time around Christians exclusively, unlike Christian colleges/universities where it tends to be kind of a bubble. You also may deal with some professors who are hostile towards Christianity, which can put you in a bit of a precarious position at times, but it's ultimately a good thing to be challenged in that way I think.

My experience at the Christian university was difficult because I was only there for three semesters and it was tough to make friends, so I will say that that does taint my view a bit. The huge pluses of Christian universities are that you have the opportunity to take Bible and theology classes that wouldn't be offered at a public university. You also have the opportunity to go to chapel multiple times a week, and you'll most likely not have to deal with the party scene nearly as much.
The downside, I think, as I mentioned before is that it tends to be a bit of a bubble, and doesn't necessarily prepare you well for relational ministry and living your life as an ambassador of Christ to the people around you like going to a public university and being involved in a campus ministry does. Also, the rules tend to be more stringent. Chapel attendance is often required, there is a dress code to some extent (ex. the school I attended wouldn't allow shorts before 4:30pm) that is enforced mainly by the RA's and RD's, and there will be some type of curfew.

Hopefully that helps at least a little bit :)
