Okay bottom line, why do people drink? Not one person can honestly say "oh I just do it because I love the way it tastes". Alcohol is an acquired taste. I loved drinking back int he day because it helped me loosen up in social settings. People drink to get drunk, it serves no other purpose. Coke tastes better than a beer, but being the only person in a group of people at a bar drinking a Coke doesn't look "cool". People drink to fit in, people drink to get drunk, people drink to unwind. Those are all sinful, selfish reasons to partake of alcoholic beverages.
I drink just because I like the taste. I love alcohol, the way it tastes as a drink and what it does to food.
I think coke tastes nasty, I love the taste of a beer. In fact, they make non-alcoholic beer because people still like the taste, but for whatever reason, can't have the alcohol.
In fact, I make my own beer. I can easily and cheaply change the alcohol content of it. Now, do I make it all 7..8..10%? No, I simply adjust it to fit the style of beer and enjoy the flavor. If I wanted to get hammered, I'd just make it all 15%.
Part of the reason I drink is because I can't eat a whole lot of sugary, milky desert all the time. So, instead, I sit back with a beer and sip it instead of going for a snack late at night.
So yes, many of us drink because we love the taste. That's why people work hard to produce good drinks, or spend lots of money on a wonderfully aged drink. If we just wanted to get drunk, we'd just drink kool-aid and grain alcohol.
I'm sorry you can't enjoy a drink the way many of us do. It may be a drug to you, but to me it's a hobby (brewing), an area of interest and a late night snack. In fact, I'm sipping some whisky right now
