I think that I've honestly witnessed to someone WHILE drinking a beer.

As far as caffeine and refined sugar ruining your body, why do you think the Mormons don't consume caffeine?

Why did you have to go and say that? (that's a rhetorical question)

Now I have to try and not begin an "are Mormans Christian" debate.

*trying to restrain myself......*

Mormans AREN'T Christian!

(now look what I went and said)

Concerning if drinking is a sin or not...
Here is an argument in favor of Jesus drinking wine.
Concering the Last Supper (Jesus did not turn water into wine here).
The "fruit of the vine" could not have been grape juice because of time considerations. The Palestine grape harvest begins in the Jewish month of Elul (August-September). The harvest is over before Tishri 15-21 (September-October), the Festival of Booths - Deuteronomy 16:13. Because the last supper was on Passover, at Nisan 14 (April), seven months had elapsed since the harvest of the vine. Long before the last supper, any grape juice in Palestine would be well fermented. So, when Jesus drank the "fruit of the vine" at the last supper, we can be sure that he could only have been drinking wine.

In the OT, the references to wine in Hebrew is generally "yayin". There are a number of different ways to say wine in Hebrew. "Yayin" is only fermented wine. That is the wine used in the Jewish festivals that are mentioned in the quote from my provious post. Why would Jesus not use the wine of the OT? I don't doubt that he did not get drunk, maybe HE didn't even drink the wine himself(debatable), but many assume that his deciples did, at least during the festivles.

Up here in the Great White North, we can drink at 18 (or 19, depends where you live).
Doclkk, since you're 18, you can come up here and party with me anytime! You won't even have to sin!!! lol

*ouch!* That fire burns...

On second thought, don't come up here and drink. I don't want to have a millstone hung around my neck!

"If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." (Matt. 18:6)

We constructed a log cabin out of an entire box of strike anywhere matches. We stuck the little action figure inside and then set the entire thing on fire. The sad thing is, I was 20 and my little bro was 10 when this took place. Our mother never let us have chemistry sets LOL She knew better. She saw the trouble we could get into with some dry newspapers, a magnifying glass, and a blazing Summer sun. *coughs* A neighbor had to call the fire department and we all got a stern lecture on fire safety. LOL

Okay, I've since done some research and I'd like to retract what I said. Not in it's entirety, but to an extent.

Drinking, in and of itself is not sinful. Getting buzzed or drunk is sinful. If our drinking goes against the laws of the land (underage drinking or drinking and driving) it is sinful. If our drinking causes someone else to stumble, it's sinful. It's best if we examine our line of reasoning behind drinking and whether or not it could offend someone around us. If you can drink with a clear conscience and stick to the Biblical guidelines then you're not sinning. I, personally, have a drinking problem (runs in the family) so it hurts me to see people drink knowing the disastrous consequences that can result from it. God has delivered me from the addiction, but I can't even be around people drinking anymore. It's too tempting. When I drive past a liquor store all I can think about is a bottle of vodka or Chambord. I had to eliminate all traces of that sin area in my life as a way of keeping me from stumbling. I am not one of those people who can just have one drink. I have to get smashed in order to have a "good time" around certain people. Sadly, when I had lost friends, I was never encouraged *not* to drink as much as I did. We got in cars drunk. We used to go to club after club, some times as many as four in one night. It was a dangerous lifestyle. I'm just fortunate God took me out of it before something terrible happened to me, or before I could get into an accident killing innocent people.

Thanks for sharing MSJones, I think I understand your stance on the subject much better now. I've done a lot of the same types of things during my crazy party times. I don't like to go to clubs anymore. I just don't see the point.

That was a pretty funny story about you and your brothers 'experiment'. It made me laugh.

This is a bit off topic, but I hear a lot of "Would you do it if Jesus were sitting beside you?" Is this how we always ought to decide on our actions and if they are right or wrong in Jesus' eyes?
Would you pop a zit, wax your legs, or make love to your spouse if Jesus were sitting beside you? I mean no disrespect, but I'm just trying to illustrate a point.

Exactly. Using that quote in every life situation really isn't fair. I just can't imagine someone asking me "Would you do it if Jesus were sitting beside you?" if I were playing video games or watching TV or sitting at the computer. That would be a very silly question to ask in those kind of situations.

Here's my answer to your questions
1) Is social drinking a sin definately not Jesus turned water into wine so it could be consumed in a social setting. Jesus him self drank wine ie last supper
2) well it isnt exactly glorifying to god is it but having said this provided u r not hurting anyone all u r doing is chating to them then no i wouldn't say it was sinful.
3) is clubbing a sin well i think ur wrong when u say that I don't think Jesus would do any of them after all where did jesus go to meet people he went to where they were he went and called disciples from their nets he went to where people were gathered so I think if Jesus were around today he would be in the nightclubs reaching people for him after all wot was jesus ministry all about meeting people where they were and using ilustrations that they understood to get his message about Gods plan across after all look at the parables he used he talked about seed to farmers he talked shepherds in a land full of them Jesus always used what people knew to explain things they did understand so the answer to the clubbing question is really what motive takes u there in my opinion im sure others may dissagree but that is there right:wave:

I have found that being in college is the hardest place to be a Christian.

I have a few questions

1. Is social drinking a sin?

2. Is hitting on girls a sin? This sounds funny, but basically, getting as many numbers for kicks and/or with guy friends for sport a sin?

3. Is clubbing a sin?

I think of WWJD and I don't think Jesus would do any of them.

1. As long as you don't inhibit your brain from functioning on a moral level, then no, I don't believe it is a sin.
2. No, interaction with the opposite sex is not a sin. How on earth would you possible get a girl interested in you if you did not show you take some sort of interest in her? Unless you are intentionally hurting the women, I don't see how it is a sin.
3. No, because it is fun does not mean it is a sin. Meeting people in a fun apmosphere is not a sin. Well, unless you go by the writings of St. Augustine and others such as him, then anything remotley pleasurable/fun/entertaining that does not incorporate god is a sin; including all three above.

I dont think Jesus would stand for President or play baseball; but that doesnt mean that either are a Sin!!
