Only have a Wii and a GameCube.

My SNES and my original GameBoy are dead.

Will eventually get a DS, but that'll probably be it until Nintendo releases its newest system.

I hope their next system has internal HDD (but continues to use SDHC cards), keeps GameCube/Wii backwards capability, allows you to transfer your Virtuals over for free, an extra USB port (all mine are used up for rechargers), and, for nostalgic reasons:

1. Zapper (a la "Captain N")
2. Mouse (remember Gnat Attack on the original Mario Paint?)
3. Another remake of Final Fantasy IV (please! :D)
Sell the Gamecube and buy a DS like. :) The DS lite is better than the DSi because it can play Gameboy Advance games. The DSi can't.

Yup, I remember the gnat attack game on Mario Paint. Why do you need another re-make of FFIV??? Get the DS one when you get a DSlite!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the GameCube has a GBA adaptor that you can use to play GBA games on the big screen, yes? If so, and especially if I can still use that adaptor with a DS Lite, I'd like to keep the GC.

Plus I like to have rumble capabilities on the GameCube games that I have.

I do plan on getting the DS Lite and not the DSi. The problem is $$$ currently, although if I come into an extra bit, it is high on my list of wants. :)

Because its my all-time favorite game and I'd love to see it get the ultimate treatment. :p ((We all have a game we'd like be given that, yes? Plus the game has such a great Christian element, though obviously not intended))

The DS version did a great job however. I still salivate when I see the opening sequence on YouTube.

Yes, the Gamecube does have the Gameboy Player attactment, which lets you play GBA, GBC and original GB games on it. You can't use it with DS games, if that's what you were asking. If you don't have one, they should be pretty cheap. I know you can get them for about $5-10 used where I am.

Personally, I play my GBA games on my Wii through emulation. Most of the games run very well, although this method does involve a bit of hacking.

Plus I like to have rumble capabilities on the GameCube games that I have.
I'm pretty sure that Gamecube games still rumble the GC controllers on the Wii. The only thing missing, as far as I know, is online play in GC games.

Oh my... FFIV is your ultimate game and you don't have it on DS. For shame. For shame...

I've played through FFIII, FFIV, DQIV, DQV, Lunar DS and Ys 1&2 so far on the DS as far as RPGs go. The DS is definitely the way to go for RPGs this generation.

Unfortunately, you can't. The X-Box is region-locked. You'd either need to get a Japanese X-Box, or get a mod chip in your North American X-Box.

My X-Box is Korean, and it has a mod-chip so I can play games from anywhere.
Is it easy and affordable to buy a Japanese Xbox in the States?

I don't know how you're blowing through all those RPGs. I've had FFIII and DQIV since Christmas, and I still haven't gotten through them. Well, grad school is one factor, I guess. Plus, I have way too many other games that compete for my attention. :smarty:

I have no idea. I live in Japan. You'd either have to find a store that carried imports, or import yourself. A used X-Box here is about $20-40, plus shipping. Maybe between $50-100?

Between one and two hours commuting, six days a week. Plus an hour and a half total trip to church and back on Sunday. This is all done on the local rail/subway systems.

It should be easy to see how I blow through so many RPGs now. It really explains the popularity of hand-helds in Japan as well.

Yes, the Gamecube does have the Gameboy Player attactment, which lets you play GBA, GBC and original GB games on it. You can't use it with DS games, if that's what you were asking.

Actually, I was asking whether it would work with a DS, but that was out of an assumption that you needed a GBA with the attachment. You showed me otherwise, which makes me quite happy. :)

If you don't have one, they should be pretty cheap. I know you can get them for about $5-10 used where I am.

More good news!

Personally, I play my GBA games on my Wii through emulation. Most of the games run very well, although this method does involve a bit of hacking.

I'm not a techie, so I'd say the safest bet for me is buy the attachment. Should be easy enough and cheap enough to find, as I have a membership at a privately-run game store.

I'm pretty sure that Gamecube games still rumble the GC controllers on the Wii. The only thing missing, as far as I know, is online play in GC games.

It does, although I'd love it if you could play N64 games with rumble as well. Pity that you cannot. :(

God is from the moon???

Isn't that like God is from Kolob? ;)

The whole forgiveness/reconciliation element is simply incredible. Very edifying.

Don't remind me :p

It does seem that way, plus since it has GBA backwards capability, the Final Fantasy Advance series as well as I+II Dawn of Souls. And that's just the Final Fantasy series. I believe 3 of the Phantasy Star games from the Master System and Genesis are playable too then, as I believe one or two of the Fire Emblem games too. Plus I think 2 or 3 of the Shining series from the Genesis are also playable too with a DS+backwards GBA.

The DS is definitely a system I want to get.

Well, you could mod a GBA to get video out... but that would involve quite a bit of work.

Summer yard sales are a good source of cheap gaming stuff. ;)

I don't think the god from kolob really "gets" the hold forgiveness/reconciliation thing like our Biblical God does...

Anyway, it is a good allegory. Even the name "Kane" is.

I've got the Phantasy Star Collection on the GBA. It contains PSI, II and III. Missing IV for some reason. The PS Collection I've got on my Saturn has I-IV, but they're all in Japanese. Oh well, I've got II-IV on my Genesis so I do have acess to all 4 games. I'm happy! I've also got the first Golden Sun and Dragon Quest I&II and III on GBC. Got none of the GBA FF games though! I do on the TV systems (I-VIII and X). Good enough for me.

I know there are a few Shining, Fire Emblem, Breath of Fire, etc. games on the GBA... so there are a ton of RPGs playable on the DS. Just too bad it doesn't play GB and GBC games...

Don't forget, the new DSi doesn't play GBA games. You need an original DS or DSlite. Get the DSlite, IMO. It can do everything the DSi can do except take pictures with a very underpowered pair of cameras (useless, really).

I found one on ebay for about that much yesterday, but i was too chicken to bid for it (only 1 day left).

Hey, I love the DSlite too. But I tend to be a completist/perfectionist, so I take longer. But I can definitely see it being more popular in Japan. It sucks that a lot of interesting games are only released over there, although I guess with my DSlite I could just buy them, since it's not regional. Now all I have to do is learn Japanese. I haven't even memorized the kana yet though, hmmm...

Why chicken? Ebay is quite secure.

Honestly, the vast majority of the best games to get released in the west. Be glad we aren't still in the late 80s/early 90s. That's when a lot of great software didn't make it westward (Dragon Quest V and VI, the Fire Emblem series, Mother 1 and 3, the ENTIRE Far East of Eden series, Final Fantasy II, III and V, Dracula/Castlevania X, a ton of shoot 'em ups on the Saturn and TG-16, and the list goes on... If you were a Turbographx-16 fan or a Sega Saturn fan when it was around (or are now), I feel sorry for you because of all the importing you'll have to do to get the best games. Not to mention the hard time you'll have with all the RPGs that've never been translated (Shining Force III parts 2 & 3 on the Saturn and the Far East of Eden series on the TG-16 come to mind right away).

If you're considering at all learning Japanese to play RPGs, I suggest you forget about it. Japanese isn't like learning Spanish or French. You've got to learn at least about 2000 different kanji in order to read effectively. Each kanji has at least two different pronunciations and can have different meanings in different situations. In other words, it takes years. Is it really worth the MASSIVE investment of time just to get through a few Japanese RPGs that probably have English FAQs available anyway?

(BTW, I realise that you're probably being sarcastic about learning Japanese for RPGs. But, just in case you were serious, take what I said as a warning against it.)

Oh man, saw you mention Guilty Gear breetai: Have you played BlazBlue yet (don't know how much you go to arcades over there)? I am awaiting the release of this game, it looks pretty awesome. Have the Limited Edition on pre-order for 360.

I haven't played BluzBlue. In fact, I haven't played anything beyond GGX. No time!

I very rarely go to arcades here. If I do, it's straight to the Taiko (Japanese drum) game or the UFO machines. Occasionally I'll play a few rounds on Dodonpachi, a Puzzle Bobble game, or something like that.

You know that just serves as a challenge to me, right? ;) I'd learn Japanese for more than just RPGs though.

Original post updated with a fun new picture
Awesome pic! This has turned out to be a really good thread, with longevity!

By the way, I heard that the 3DO sold for about $700 in America when it came out. Is this true?

Yeah, I think it did. I was in Canada then, but I'm guessing it was either $699 or $799 in Canadian dollars. I remember rented it from a local video rental shop when it first game out quite a few times. $5 for a night. :) I played a lot of Gex and The Need for Speed then. This particular model cost me about $15. In fact, other than the Wii (25,000yen, or about $250) and PS3 (a small mortgage), each of the systems in the picture cost between $3 and $70 (300-7000yen)! To be honest, I was kind of hoping some other members here at CF would have collections to post pics of... but maybe I'm the only one with a sizable collection of this stuff?

I boxed up most of my systems last night to ship them to Canada... :cry:That's why I took that picture.

Can you name all of the systems?

Awwwww man, why are your systems heading to the great white north?

I could tell pretty much everyone one of them but the one on the bottom right (not the handhelds).

I am right that the rightmost handheld is the wonderswan, right? I wasn't huge into handhelds, so I can rarely tell. I wouldn't mind having a Lynx one day though.
