Even by Tischendorf's own account, he basically stole the manuscript and then used the authority of the Russian CZar to 'borrow' it back to Russia. From there it was sold to the British Museum for a half million dollars.
Its called fraud.
Whether the monks were stupid or greedy is irrelevant. It *WAS* their property.
