I am starting a thread here for Codex Sinaiticus, since they intend to make it available on the net soon, in theory anyway:

For now, here are medium resolution images from the British Museum: (Don't ask me why they are being so cheap about this)

Codex Sinaiticus Sample Pages

This one of Song of Songs I think is from the Facsimile:

Two more images here, Lord's prayer(Luke) and Ending of Revelation:

And there are eight (nicer) medium resolution pages available here;

[will post link here shortly]

Oh, just a question, while I'm here anyway :)

There appears to be some disagreement as to whether Constantin Tischendorf stole the CS, or it was borrowed to him, and he just never returned it, having given it to the Zar. What is your opinion on this?

My opinion is that ethically, he defrauded the monks out of the manuscript, using dirty tricks and the power of his sponsor, although technically, I am sure he would claim he did no technical wrong, in the same way that a mafia don might deny culpability for ordering a hit on some drug dealer in default of payment.

Yes, exactly the same way. Those are entirely analogous situations.

Well, Nazaroo likes to be a bit pictoresue - you'll just have to look through the imagery to see the true underlying analogy. Don't let yourself be deluded by your senses.

lol. Yup, you know those senses. I think Nazaroo was built more for a pre-humanist time. He would have been good. No doubt he would have been chanting "off with his head" when Tyndale got caught.

Nazaroo, needless to say, I am disappointed in your remarks.
Lets pause to imagine for a moment the disappointment of the monks, when after having Tischendorf go over their heads to put pressure on them from the Czar to lend it for study, it is never returned, but instead sold for half a million dollars to England.

You may call it sour grapes, but they lent it in good faith in spite of their own intuition, and sadly they were correct. What a jerk was Tischendorf.

Here is what the BBC News has to tell us about how the original owners of the manuscript feel about Tischendorf's version of events:

"It remained there until the middle of the 19th Century when a visiting German scholar, Constantin von Tischendorf, took parts of it away to Germany and Russia. To this day, the monastery officially regards it as stolen. "
Here is the link to the BBC story:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4739369.stm

I think this just about says it all,
and it clearly explains why the Vatican didn't want Tischendorf to have 'access' to Codex Vaticanus either without strict supervision. And even then he broke the agreement and had to negotiate to have access to it again.

He who is untrustworthy in a small thing is untrustworthy in a large thing.

Do you happen to know who produced the facsimile that this link has show in four sample pages? I am asking because I have a facsimile copy that was reproduced in 1982 by Brown and Thomas and these sample pages are mush finer quality. They almost look like Hi-res photos.

The first link is actually to the British Museum site. They have probably begrudgingly updated these four, previously released to the public photos.
I have 8 more folios of the Gospel of Matthew, but I have temporarily lost the link.
I will repost it as soon as I find it.

I have secured some space from a friend to post these 16 pages of Matthew:

These pics can be clicked on to expand, and can be saved to disk.

EDIT:
Sorry, that link is now dead. Here is the new one:

Apparently the Codex Sinaiticus includes in it's canon, the Shephard of Hermas and the Epistle of Barnabas. A good chunk of the OT is missing but it does have the entire NT. One should take a look alongside it the Codex Vaticanus as the Vaticanus was complied about roughly the same time.

Your link appears dead.
This one may still be good:

Alexandrinus and Sinaiticus-Pseudofacsimiles are there too.

The way I heard the story, the monks were going to toss it out with the trash until this foreigner (Tischendorf) took an interest in it, at which point they decided it might be valuable, and hid it away.

It sounds like they had hopes of selling it.
