Very true...."saving the world" through means reminiscent of junk science and social darwinism where the weak who can't adapt to the solutions made by those in power for cleaning things up are either dismissed, ignored or outright killed..Evironmental politics are at their worst when they rely on poor people continuing to live miserably.
Before going further, no - plenty of people are for environmental stewardship of the environment while also recognizing how much of an issue it is politically when it comes to de-empowering other groups (especially Indigenous peoples in communities or areas) from actually having a say or a voice for how the process plays out. That is - and will ALWAYS be - an issue, especially when people saying how the environment should be handled get ignored if they feel you don't need extensive government intervention to do so. Last year the pilot facility went on line and we had an aha moment. We were kind of assuming all along that the Sahara Forest Project was geared toward creating a sustainable model for developing nations, but in the context of California’s devastating drought it finally occurred to us that the Sahara Forest Project model would be quite useful right here in the US.
As it turns out, we were pretty much on track. Although the Sahara Forest Project is designed to come up with exportable strategies it is not necessarily a one size fits all solution, and Dr. Corless noted that its application to other countries depends at least partly on the existence of a developed infrastructure.

Earlier this year, the Sahara Forest Project announced the successful completion of a vegetable crop cycle that demonstrated the potential for market competition with greenhouses in Europe. Dr. Corless pointed out that this mark was achieved despite the extreme conditions of the desert location.
That crop happened to be cucumbers, which Dr. Corless explained were chosen to launch the project because, among other reasons, cucumbers are sensitive to salt. The ability of cucumbers to thrive at the project is a good indicator of the potential for other crops to do well.

While desalinization makes sense on the Arabian Peninsula, it would not be cost-effective in California. Besides why do desalinization when currently water from tertiary sewage treatment plants is being dumped into the ocean? There is no reason that water can't be used for agriculture instead. In fact, the water is even drinkable.
As for the Southwest, a better option would be something similar to the Qanat system of the ancient Persians. Qanats are ideal for high deserts which have surrounding mountains which get sufficient precipitation. By bringing the water down in underground tunnels there is no loss to evaporation. Furthermore it would take 10,000 years for the ground water to be adversely effected by this form of irrigation unlike wells that lower the ground water within 50 years.

I think that we are talking here about something far beyond economics.
Millions of lives are at stake if we don't get prepared for what is probably coming.
One of the major advantages to desalination technology is that every cubic meter of ocean water that is desalinated takes some of the pressure off oceans so that the overflow of New Orleans, parts of Florida, Bangladesh, The Nethernalds and many other areas is delayed.
Uh, Dennis just because you desalinate the water doesn't mean it won't eventually end up in the ocean. Yes, we use the water, but then it goes back again. If global warming continues the oceans will rise, there is no way around that.

True.......... but getting one cubic kilometer of water out of the oceans, desalinated, and added to the water table of any nation with a desert would be good news for the residents of New Orleans!

It truly is fascinating that some of the people who seem the least concerned for all of the fears arising on the planet and its mistreatment (Even though they have said it is a problem) would be the Buddhist Monks in the monasteries throughout Asia.....
But with the Buddhists monks, it intrigues me to see how they seem to have accepted a finality on the entire issue with feeling that there are greater concerns that are to be held to - and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh noted that "only love can save us from climate change." In his view, most people are not responding to the threat of global warming, despite overwhelming scientific evidence, because they are unable to save themselves from their own personal suffering - thus making themselves too burdened to worry about the battles impacting the Earth/Nature. Although he has outlined practical ways to address global warming before in his books (such as The World We Have: A Buddhist Approach to Peace and Ecology: Easyread Large and The Blooming of a Lotus: Revised Edition of the Classic Guided Meditation ), he has still been of the mindset that nothing is permanent and there needs to be a willingness to not hold so tightly to things. Through meditation and education and acts of love one person at a time, change is a gradual process. We see that today, in countries such as Thailand and Japan, many Buddhist monks are active in Green groups.. And we can see in places like Bhutan where there is immense security due to how others handle themselves - more noted in Water and Climate in the Himalayas and Buddhism and climate change | Sujato’s Blog
There have been cases of others standing in the way of aggressive destruction of the environment (like these Buddhist monks in Cambodia blessing trees which are about to be destroyed to make way for a banana plantation - with the orange cloth making them sacred and used in the hopes of deterring loggers from cutting them down.
But if things do not change, there's no sense in fear being promoted within that system.
I am reminded of where Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gary Snyder wrote an essay called “Buddhism and the Coming Revolution"....detailing at one point the practice of Buddhist Anarchism (more in Buddhist Anarchism (Gary Snyder) and BUDDHISM AND THE COMING REVOLUTION by Gary Snyder | Arthur Magazine). Buddhist Anarchism is very similar in many ways with Anarcho Primitivism . And interestingly enough, Buddhist Anarchism praises Chaos as a harbinger of change...yet unlike more mainstream anarchists - they don't seem to bother creating their own institutions since Chaos will itself bring change. On a side note, seeing how the world operates and what is going on is indeed unfortunate.
