  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have this one class that I am taking online (Health Psychology) that causes me much stress and many many hours of work a week.

It is not so much about the work as it is that: I am getting bad grades just because I can't find scholarly articles. I write like 4 pages for each lesson and work hard on each of them. However, my teacher is not grading me well, and whenever I ask her things, she makes me act like I am stupid for not knowing how to figure it all out.

I don't know if I want some feedback or not...lol...well, if you have any, feel free to share...guess this might be a vent....:help:

This probably won't help you any, but with the classes I've had where I didn't do well, but worked hard in, I've taken some satisfaction in the fact that I actually learned the material.

As for the teacher's attitude, in my experience, it's been that the prof is bitter over something else in their life. Like not teaching at <fill in the blank for whatever the top school is in their field>, or being rejected for tenure, or having too much gas. It's on the teacher, not you. Don't own it.

If you're working hard on the assignments, and the teacher isn't giving you decent feedback, are there other profs you can go to for help, or TAs or anything along those lines? If the research is a problem, what about asking for help from reference librarians? They're great resources.

Keep your spirits up and don't let the attitudes of small-minded, bitter people get you down. You'll be fine.

Where are you looking for the scholarly articles? I used to have trouble finding scholarly articles as well, partly because I didn't really understand that a textbook didn't count as a scholarly article and partly because I didn't really know where to look. Now I have the opposite problem - I generally find so many articles that I can't possibly use them all.

Searching the Internet using Google or other such search engines likely isn't going to help much in finding a scholarly article. However, if your university library has an online journal database, you might find that very useful, especially if they also subscribe to some of the online journals. For older articles though, you'll have to get the actual journals from the university library. If your university doesn't have a large library, find out whether they do inter-library loans from other universities.

Can you get a tutor? Sometimes you get stuck with pretty bad teachers, your teacher sounds like his/her attitude is not very good. Try not to let him/her make you feel bad. Just keep trying your best, that's all you can do. If you get bad marks that you feel you don't deserve, you can always take it higher up the chain in an appeal.

Is there another tutor/professor you know who you could ask for advice? I know exactly what you mean about tutors making you feel stupid for asking a question, it's the most annoying and depressing thing! When I'm having trouble finding sources I ask my course leader for advice, because we get along well and he's helped me in the past with a lot of different aspects of the course.

Have you tried PubMed? That will give you a lot of citations and abstracts, at least, and then you can go to your library to look them up, or go to an on-campus computer to access the articles that are available online.

Yes, I've used that site. Every lesson I have to find a scholarly article for something or another. Right now I am supposed to find an article related to how stress is measured in a certain aspect (school, work, multi roles, etc...). I seem to have difficulties finding what I want.

My teacher told me there were some links and stuff on the course site and I looked and couldn't find it so we contacted tech support. They said that it was her fault; she hadn't posted them. Yet, she hasn't apoligised to me for her "you are dumb" attitude and she never got the stuff up on the site...so I guess I have to email her again....oh bother:(

In my undergrad i was a religion major but had to take 2 semesters of science. I HATED those classes. i took "Life Science" and would make D's and C's on like every test - and we had notes to help us. It was like a completly different language. Then i had to take "HUMAN HEALTH AND DISAESE" -not only was it gross and made me worry that i was dying/sick of a lot of things but it was so much information and they assumed i knew stuff, which i did not at all. It amazed me how professors in your general ed classes think you should know about that subject well - Theres is no way to know that much of every subject - and i refuse to waste my time learning many facts i wont ever use. Thankfully, not all professors taught that way. God bless those teachers that taught general ed as a GENERAL class and expected we didnt know much.

i guess i didnt help solve anything but i do sympathize.
