  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The day when churches start teaching evolution to kids, that is the day when I will agree to schools teaching creationism. That is all.
TE churches don't teach evolution?

I wouldn't. Creationism shouldn't be taught in public school, irrespective of what churches do.

Anyway, teaching science in church sounds misplaced as well, though they could probably benefit from teaching people that they don't have to shun science. Also some lessons about humility might be in order, as many religious believers seem to consider themselves experts on science that they know little about.

Peter :)

Churches shouldn't be teaching science at all -- it's not their job, and they wouldn't be very good at it. Churches should be teaching that Christian faith is compatible with acceptance of evolution, and many do. Our church, in fact, does teach high school kids a (very) little bit of evolution, as part of a four week class laying out Christian responses to science. (We're covering a little more of the science in an adult education class this fall, but that's likely to involve a small number of self-selected participants, while the high school class was for everyone in the high school group.)

Christians in a church SHOULD teach its congregation about the weakness of evolution. Unfortunately, a good Christian like you would probably not do that. Which does not mean you do not see the weakness of evolution. You simply do not want to talk about it. I have no problem to explain any strong evidence of evolution in any Sunday School class. But I will also tell people the weakness of those strong evidences. That is the way to be an honest and responsible Christian scientist.

What the heck are you talking about? What is it that you think I simply don't want to talk about?

As you have demonstrated quite admirably on this forum that you know nothing about evolution, one can only wonder at the gall that allows you to talk confidently about its weaknesses.

And you can talk confidently about evolution's weaknesses?

Scientists love finding weaknesses. Weaknesses are exciting. It means there's more work to do.
I could make a point here, but it would be off-topic.

I'm sure you know what's going through my mind right now.

Christians in a church SHOULD teach its congregation about the weakness of evolution.

Some do, the problem is that those weaknesses are imagined.

Unfortunately, a good Christian like you would probably not do that.
Correct, it's not the proper place for it.

Which does not mean you do not see the weakness of evolution.
With all the strong evidence coming from many independent fields of science I see no weakness.

You simply do not want to talk about it.
I never have in church, it's not the place for it.

I have no problem to explain any strong evidence of evolution in any Sunday School class.
I do, because church is a place for worship, not teaching evolution or any science.

But I will also tell people the weakness of those strong evidences.
And none of it comes from the scientific literature.

That is the way to be an honest and responsible Christian scientist.
Refresh my memory, are you the one who studied geology through the ICR?

I do, because church is a place for worship, not teaching evolution or any science.
By way of contrast, atheists have their own object of worship, don't they?

Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

I understand the misunderstandings about evolution that are cultivated and regurgitated among creationists as gospel, and why it is necessary for them to do so. I also understand why these misunderstandings only work on those with an inadequate grasp of evolution.

Churches shouldn't be teaching science at all --
I have no problem with churches teaching science to show how science supports a literal interpretation of the Bible. :)
it's not their job,
Says who? God created the physical world, which reveals His glory. An understanding of the physical world that is consistent with God's written word helps us to better appreciate God's glory.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands...For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — His eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." (Ps 19:1, Rom 120).

Any scientific theory about the 'heavens' that contradicts God's written word denies the glory of God as declared by the heavens.
and they wouldn't be very good at it.
Says who? All you need is a pastor who knows the Bible and physics.
Churches should be teaching that Christian faith is compatible with acceptance of evolution
That's impossible. The Christian faith is compatible with the Bible. Evolution theory is not. Evolution theory contradicts a plain reading of the Bible without any valid biblical reason:

"The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground...[Not from apes]" (Gen 2:7).

It is not simply that we don't understand evolution theory. It is that you don't understand the Bible.

Oooh, let me try.

Who changed the truth of reality into a god, and whorshipped and served this superstition more than reality, which has existed for ever. Amen

Words are cool and writing things down is fun.

Kudos to you for choosing a book Paul actually wrote.
