I believe conscious eternal torment is really an attack on the character of God.

I believe you are right. It is a doctrine of Satan against the character of God but I don't believe that everyone that teaches that is doing so to attack the character of God. There are many people who love God who believe in eternal punishing of the unsaved. They love God enough they are sometimes willing to die for him but still believe God torments the wicked. They claim that God became man to die a horrible death to pay for the penalty for those willing to accept it.

A body apart from the spirit is dead James 2:26 only Jesus can make someone immortal and He promises that at His Second Coming for those who are in Him.

1 Thess 4: 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
