I just got this game for Christmas, on the DS... yes I have to agree. Best game ever. I'm not a big gamer at all and I don't even like RPGs cause they're usually boring, lots of grinding, random battles and WAAAAY too long. But I love this game.

I had actually played this game the first time about 10 years ago I guess and it immediately shot up to the top with my other two favorite games of all time... The Legend of Zelda and LoZ III: Link to the Past. After playing it again though on the DS, I think this edge's out LoZ III for the top spot.

Love the story. Great characters. Plus it has the most epic video game score ever. Frog's Theme being the best in the game. I've been humming that tune ever since I played it the first time.

I was so sad Square shutdown the guy who was remaking it for fun. It looked so amazing with new graphics. I do like that they remade it for the DS, but they could have done so much more for it than just new cut scenes.

I'd be all for them making it a whole new game. :)

I don't know...

Ys Book I&II, Ys IV, Lunar 1 and 2, Phantasy Star IV, Dragon Quest V and Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI all compete with it well I think, as far as JRPGs go. If you include any RPG, Fallout 1, 2 and 3, Elder Scrolls III and IV, Balder's Gate II and Knights of the Old Republic all are as good (or better) in various ways.

I'm finding that Dragon Age Origins is a very good game as well that can be put in the list of top RPGs. The replayability of it is amazing. I'm on my second run through now and the game, apart from the main story, has changed greatly based on the different decisions I've made.

Not it isn't. Only when you combine it's story line with both Radical Dreamers (SNES semi-sequal) and Chrono Cross do you get that. The story line is quite interesting, got me interested in logic, video games, fiction, reading, and a number of other areas.

Well, they added in the official end boss, which I believe ties in with Chrono Cross. They also added in a few extras, but not really enough to make it a new game.

Anyways, as to them shutting it down, you have Crimson Echoes, which is a fan made continuation of the story. It was shut down after it was about 98% complete, and all copies were ordered destroyed. A leak of it at about 75% complete is out there, but it needs major polish, bug fixes, and is missing story in places. Luckily, a loop hole allowed the original person to release a play through of Crimson Echoes on to you tube, just the game itself had to be destroyed (likely it was converted into a destroyed, but recoverable state).

There are at least two other remakes as well, one of which tried to turn CT into a 3D game. Both had very little done on them, but of the 3D one, the scenes are beautiful, especially considering how long ago that remake was made.

Really, Square have been a bleep bleep bleep about Chrono Trigger, especially considering how long it has been since they released their last new addition to the series.

I never cared much for Chrono Cross, to be honest. Had some good music, but I felt that dropping the main characters was a mistake for a sequel. Radical Dreamers was more of a side story that I never bothered to play because of it being in Japanese, though I know there is a translated version around.

These guys were pretty far along when Square shut them down.

Best RPG of its generation, hands down. Final Fantasy VI was also fantastic (and arguably the last great games in the FF franchise), but CT had a better battle system and, most importantly, no random encounters.

CT is the best jRPG to date, by a long shot. I play it again about once every other year or so. (I go on retro kicks every now and then :p)

Buuuuut, I have to say I prefer wRPGs. I view the Baldur's Gate series, Elder Scrolls series, and [almost any Bioware game] as a lot more fun. I prefer 'creating the role' versus 'playing the role'

I love you.

That series is so overlooked it feels like. I never hear anybody talk about it.

One game/series that I wish wasn't the red headed stepchild that it seems to be is "Secret of Mana." I'd love to see that get the Chrono treatment especially since like 70% of the game's script didn't get translated for the original and a lot of the games feel was lost as a result.
