• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1) what causes them

2) how do I prevent them

I don't get them back to back but I get them often enough to know its not normal. And I usually wake up with a racing heart and it worries me...

This is not easily answered. Dreams have three sources. The first source is the rumination of your heart regarding your life. The second is demonic influence and the third are dreams that come from God. The first source is the majority of our dreams.

A nightmare could derive from both the rumination of your heart and demonic influence. Fear is based upon belief. Unbelief and fear go hand in hand. Unbelief is belief in anything contrary to the Word of God. Satan is the father of lies. All lies are twisting of truth. Truth must be present in a lie or the lie will not be believed. Satan understands how to take small fears and turn them into bigger fears.

Fear is a godly thing. It is the emotion of caution and carefulness. It becomes ungodly when it paralyzes us or motivates us to make hasty decisions and take foolish actions.

Dreams are symbolic language of the heart. If the symbolism is misunderstood, confusion can be created. Dreams are not made for conscious comprehension, although we are able to consciously comprehend them. Dreams are communications of the spirit to the heart, which is why spirits can touch us in our dreams, whether they be God or demons.

Not knowing your nightmares, all I can suggest is that you stand in your authority in Christ. We are told:

2Co 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds
2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
2Co 10:6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

Controlling our thought life is the heart of Christian discipleship. Review the nightmares and verbally cast them out of your mind. Verbally declare the truth of the Scriptures of who you are in Christ and the promises of God that apply to you in Christ. Monitor the meditations of your heart. What do you think about all day? Those thoughts will become part of your dream life, too. If you think of fearful things, that fear will be in your dreams. If you think of the blessings you have Christ, those thoughts will also be in your dreams.

Do you remember the content?

Are you in a good bible believing congregation?
Yes I remember it. I don't think its important though.. Lol I dreamt there was this angry ,big kangaroo that was after me ..it was beating on the sliding glass door...and I ran up stairs..it follows and I got in a car and took off... Also a celebrity was going crazy.. So nothing special... I do know dreams have importance and I can discern between which ones are garbage and which has a message. Also, once I get my license ..ill go back to church...I can't because I just have one car and my mom uses it for work.

Yeah - dreams can be rather crazy sometimes.

If you have friends at church - hang out with them and have them pray for you. You will probably want to talk to the pastor and his wife for prayer as well. Being closer to the situation they would probably have the better discernment on how to pray.

I also heard of you eat before you go to sleep...it may cause nightmares. But before I went to sleep.I didn't think about anything bad or watch anything scary...I am in a stressful situation.. and if this is it,which I think it is, the nightmares won't stop till I get out of my situation. I guess I just have to pray about it .

I rather just ask God... From past experience...I don't want to rely in,a pastor too much. For one, I have god with me ..so god can tell me what's wrong...,and two, I felt like I was relying on my pastor way too much..asking them this and that..as if they were a genie or psychic..and that's not healthy..nor does it help your relationship with god grow.

Matt 28 says mature believers are to make disciples. Not just orphaned converts. In the language of the day that was a very intensive training period into spiritual adulthood. With the physically adult disciples - it still took the God of the Universe 3 1/2 years to get them ready.

You relying on a pastor or someone else, even for a period of years, is acceptable and expected scripturally.

Yes but at some point you have to have your own relationship with god. I always went to them just to hear what god wanted to say to me because they could hear better than me... I'm not saying pastors aren't important but you shouldn't rely too heavily on them for every aspect of your life because then your pastor becomes god..and not the lord...and you yourself don't develop the ability to hear God. Then there are wolves in sheep's clothing that will lead you astray if you don't have your o2n relationship with god. So yes, you are supposed to rely on a pastor as a spiritual baby but then at some point you have to mature.. God wants to talk to you himself and alot of people don't believe that.

I can only tell you about personal experience. Take it for what you will. I am a mother to a 5 year old girl who has recurring nightmares. Random things she tells me like she was mad at her baby brother and started hitting him, or her brother got hurt from a laser. The dreams usually have to do with her brother getting hurt in some way.

Anyway, I felt like she was under attack. So I rebuked the enemy that was trying get to hurt her. I did this on my own because she doesn't need to know about that yet. I may do this every couple of weeks because they do tend to come back after a while.

We also pray every night and ask God to give her good dreams and stop the bad dreams from coming while she sleeps.

To learn about rebuking, try reading a book by Watchman Nee called Resist the Devil. It was a huge help to me to learn about spiritual warfare. It's only found on amazon Kindle for $0.99.
