Here is the context. Spurgeon quote on war...Despite the long history, from the beginning, of Christians refusing to take part in wars, you see how foreign this in our "cultural moment" to us American Evangelicals from my question at the Spurgeon Library Conference
As always, the never-ending smoke screen covering up the subject of X'ns going to war is the killer threatening one's family. I have never seen that myself, but all my life I have watched American Christians march off to war. American X'ns just unable to face that subject, as the video demonstrates. About | christianpacifismChristians certainly shouldn't be warmongers but I believe that a Christian could not be a Pacifist when their family is threatened by someone who is intent upon their harm! There is nothing wrong with a Christian being in the military and I believe that more Christians need to be in the military. However, if someone joins the military because they are "bloodthirsty" and just out looking to kill someone (I. E., "Psycho" in Stripes), there is something quite wrong with this person and even the military wouldn't want to have someone like this within their ranks! No one should hate war more than the one who has to go out and fight it!
“..the truth as to war must be more and more insisted on: the loss of time, labour, treasure, and life must be shown, and the satanic crimes to which it leads must be laid bare. It is the sum of all villainies, and ought to be stripped of its flaunting colours, and to have its bloody horrors revealed; its music should be hushed, that men may hear the moans and groans, the cries and shrieks of dying men and ravished women….” Christians, Truth, and War’s FruitWar is a horrible thing that mostly destroys the innocent. Trying to rationalize it only works if we ignore what it means to be Christian.
Great points! We are certainly convinced that there is some sort of "Imminent Threat" that must be dealt with and one of the most vital things the "Higher Ups" must do is "Sell" this immediate urgency to those in the ranks so they will be "all in" and fully committed to the task at hand. I served in the Navy during the Reagan Administration and was 100% committed to fighting communism and Islamic terrorism. I was ready to "Kick Raghead Butt" in 1986 when "Uncle Ronnie" sent us into the Med to join up with the Sixth Fleet during Operation Eldorado Canyon! When the Iron Curtain fell and Clinton became president, I found it difficult to objectively "follow orders" and just do my job so I got out after my second enlistment. I have second-guessed this decision numerous times and could really use the retirement pension right about now but I think I made the right decision based solely upon principle. As always, the never-ending smoke screen covering up the subject of X'ns going to war is the killer threatening one's family. A man like Saddam Hussein was probably the best-case scenario one could hope for in this part of the world! Islamic extremism was held at bay and the citizens had a great deal of religious freedom! A "Constitutional Republic" like we have here in the United States simply will not work in that sort of culture but seems that we are too stupid to realize this! If this was something that the Iraqis actually wanted, they needed to go out and fight for it themselves! No one came and "Liberated" the American Colonials from the tyranny of the British crown! It was the Colonials with a "Give me liberty or give me death" mindset who fought and secured this freedom for themselves! Is war effective? Look at how the United States removed Saddam from power, and then ISIS was able to take over.
Amen. And Romans 13 Romans “13” In Context"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ"
2 Corinthians
Charles Spurgeon: 'The church, we affirm, can neither be preserved nor can its interests be promoted by human armies. We have all thought otherwise in our time, and have foolishly said when a fresh territory was annexed to our empire, “Ah! what a providence that England has annexed Oude,” — or taken to itself some other territory — “Now a door is opened for the Gospel” (“Independence of Christianity,”'American Christians used to believe they were advancing God's kingdom by spreading liberal democracy throughout the world, wrapped up in millinerian beliefs of the founders before them.
After WW2, Liberalism basically became solidified as the new religion. The fall of the Soviet Union was the beginning of the eschaton, or "the end of history" as the 1990's were referred to as, when the new religion became the uncontested world superpower. (Soon afterwards, Americans were bombing Christians in Serbia.)
The Boomer generation views the defense of liberal democracy around the world as a sacred mission. They are ready and eager to start dropping bombs on a country halfway around the world for the violation of outlawing homosexuality.. And of course there is a dispensational and neoconservative element that sees America's mission as primarily being a defender of Israel.
A Christian should probably only join a military if it's to advance a Christian kingdom. But of course, the same American Christians who are the most pro-war, who call for eternal war against Christian Russia, are also the ones who are horrified about the idea of America being a Christian Nation instead of a secular liberal democracy.
Makes sense in an ironic sort of way I guess.
I, for one, am glad to see the "Boomer Truth Regime" on its way out of power.
