In our present times is it worth being a Christian? Well in my last post we looked at the past. Now lets look at the present. Right now what are you thinking? Are you thinking about yesterday or are you thinking about the day before. It is possible that you are thinking what am I going to do this afternoon or tomorrow? Jesus Christ can mean something to you in the present life. Look around you and what do you see? I believe you see a lot of restless and unhappy people. Its hard to understand why they are not happy. they have everything you would want but yet they are not happy. People have more and more but enjoying it less and less. They are miserable. They have material things and have all the things money can buy and yet they are not happy. I am reminded of the story of the book of Ecclesiastes, which illustrates what people try to find in this life to make them happy. The book of Ecclesiastes was written by King Solomon. I call it the merry go round book. You see it gets on one thing and tries it and he goes all the way around and when he gets off he is right back where he started. Think of the things Solomon tried? Luxury, he was considered the richest man who ever lived, luxry and material things will not make you happy. Then he tried liquor and in ecclesiastes 2:3 he said! I sought in my heart to give myself wines. He had access to every kind of alcoholic beverage that was known to man. All that drinking can do is give you a temporary escape. When the hangover goes and the effects of the spirits leave you, you have the same problems, the same burdens, the same desires, and the same emptiness in your heart. He tried lust. The Bible says he had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3) You know I was thinking! How would you like to have 700 wives and 300 concubines and have all of the cousins and kinfolks to come and spend a week with you in the summer? Care to answer?
In our world today there are a lot of people trying lust. They think they can find fulfillment in their life with a love affair. They think they can have a little harmless escapade over on the side somewhere and it will fulfill that desire and gnawing in their heart, but you do not find happiness in disobeying what God says in his Word about lust. Solomon wrote perhaps the greatest love song ever penned by mortal man, when he composed the beautiful Song of Solomon. But do you know what Solomon said about his learning and all of his wisdom? He said, all was vanity and vextation of spirit, there was no profit under the sun (Ecc.2:11) Yes! it's worth it to be a Christian because what it means right now. There are many problems being a Christian. If you are a real child of God in this present life you are going to have many persecutions. Sometimes it really hurts when your so called friends exclude you from their group and don't let you become part of them. They become cold and harsh. There are persecutions attached to being a Christian. Jesus says,"He sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:45) And because you are a Christian doesn't mean you won't have some tragedies along the way.
