I'm also late to the party, but I run to music most of the time. I use a cross section of secular and Christian music. I like rock, alternative and heavy metal, so I run to bands like MercyMe, Casting Crowns (their heavier stuff), Kutless, Skillet, Red, Third Day, Lauren Daigle (good for jogging, or slower runs), also Hawk Nelson's 2 most recent CDs (after they changed singers and went from punk to an alternative style). For the secular stuff, I tend to run to Queen, particularly their rock and disco stuff. Creed, Evanescence. I also run to Metallica, Megadeth (if you don't know their stuff, start with Rust in Peace and work your up to 2015). I also include Sonata Arctica (Finnish power metal, they sing in English).
There are two apps I would recommend for runners: Zombies, Run!, which is a mission based story line about a zombie apocalypse and the survivors, it's really cool and intersperses story parts in amongst your music playlist as you're running. And the other app I recommend is PaceDJ. PaceDJ reads the tempo information of all of your music and you tell how fast you run, and it gives you a playlist based on how many beats per minute you set. I find them both useful and I can run them simultaneously on my phone while I'm running at the gym. But you can also use them for running outside, and they're both good.
