Hi, I am a father of two sons (twins) with both non-verbal autism. Their autism activated after a cocktail vaccine shot against Mumps disease, Measles and rubella disease. They changed their behavior radically within a week time. I live in the Netherlands and our healthcare system is not equipped enough to deal with this task group. The Dutch Law does not support to provide this group with both education and health care and tailored education. In the Netherlands you are obligated to choose for healthcare OR education. This is against the international laws of the right to have education. If you choose for education, than the system won't provide health care. So we had to choose for the health care. My sons live now in a group that is managed by accompanists.
Every time I visit my kids it breaks my heart to leave them behind. The amount of physical care they need is not able to combine with a job and is to demanding.
In 2006 I went to the option institute for the Sonrise program in Massachusetts. I loved the method because it is child centered and respectful towards the child.
Here in the Netherlands the institutions are more like companies that see people more as a revenue model. They see their clients as people with problematic behavior but have no self reflection why people behave sometimes different. Accompanists are trained to control the people and situation by commands and strict rules. The y don't invest in learning them to communicate but they feel entitled to tell the parents what their children think.
I hope someday to start our own group with our ow selection of accompanists that have a more humane style of communicating with clients and does invest in helping them in communication and being more independent. Are there her other parents in the Netherlands with non verbal autistic children? I believe my children have a normal intelligence but the lack of education the have an enormous lag in their development.
