It is Truly God’s will that Christianity dominates the world and ushers in God’s Reign under the Kingship of His Son, Jesus Christ. Amen!

These guys agreed with you:

The last groups that had that mentality weren't afraid to chop off a limb or two, or torture your infants in front of you in order to make you "come around" and see things their way. Makes me wonder if a future iteration will be any less gruesome...

That's the crux of it. As American Christianity (or more precise U.S. Christianity) declines from a fundamentalist/evangelical view of what it means to be a Christian, those folks perceive a general decline in Christianity as a whole.

U.S. Christians have had things "their way" for so long, that when things aren't going the way the want them to, it must mean that the end times are nigh.
Theologically conservative U.S. Christians have not had their way since the 1960s. Liberal Protestants have won in the cultural sphere, but their congregations are aging and their pews are empty. Christian growth in the States over the last few decades has occurred in evangelical, especially Pentacostal-types of churches.

Fundamentialism was a factor in President Reagan's election, but it proved problematic when G.W. Bush spoke at Bob Jones University, after which he distanced himself from the school.
There has been some decline in fundamentalist colleges and churches since the 1970s. Some of the ones that have survived have gone more evangelical, such as Liberty.

That's precisely it. A loss of privilege to those that have been privileged for generations feels like persecution.
