Hello. A friend is researching an article about arranged marriage outside of cultures that typically practice arranged marriage (such as certain Islamic or Indian communities). He is particularly interested in arranged marriages among Christian/secular families.

I've got a sister-in-law who was sort of like arranged with someone she already knew, someone in the family circle you might say who got up in years also (30s) and wasn't married. My wife said one of her cousins (one of the prettiest in the family, and still in her early 20's strangely enough) was arranged by her parents. maybe they dated, too. I don't think I could arrange an interview, though, since they are thousands of miles away.

Lot's of Koreans get matched up. I'm sure you could find some Christian Koreans who'd been matched up if you went to Korea or went somewhere with a large Korean community.

As to unfortunately, my family arranged a marriage for me to a man twice my age. My family also believed in the bride price. He had been paying $25,000 for me in installments over the previous two years. I refused to marry the man, they believed I was ungrateful and operating outside of the god-given authority placed over me as a woman, that being my grandfather (if I had had a father it would have been him.)

I no longer consider myself to be a Christian. This wasn't the final straw but it was one of several spiritual abuses that led me to abandon the name.
