In tradition, you hold it in your left hand to pray, leaving your right hand to do the Sign of the Cross. When not using it, it should be wrapped around your left wrist to remind you of prayer if your wearing short sleeves though, I think it should be placed in the left pocket so it is not out in the open for everyone to see because that can lead to pride.

It might depend a little bit on the length of it. If it's a 33-knot one, you could probably wear it on your wrist without anyone noticing or caring, because to most people, it just would look like some kind of a bracelet. Lots of people these days were little bracelets that often don't even have any meaning, so most people won't think anything of it.

If it's a 100-knot chotki, it would depend on the knot size. Most can be worn around the neck without people realizing it has any religious significance.

Grace and peace,
John

Don't get it wet and don't feed it after midnight. Polish it regularly.
:p :D

Thank you.

Its 100-knot, but I think I'll have to carry it in my pocket, it wouldn't fit around my head :)

the simple answer is YES :D

in the Slavic use a Chotki is often made with wooden beads . I also have a Serbian one made from Jacobs tears which with use become beautifully smooth and slip through your fingers easily.

I do have a lovely blue knotted one of 100 knots which I was fortunate to find in France - that goes with me a good deal and always to Church. OK I know I should not use it during DL but I do - well with a homily in Ukrainian what else can I do but pray - since I understand maybe 1 or 2 words during the whole Homily :)

Great to see discussion of chotkis here!

Traditionally chotki are prayer ropes made of wool. They are made out of many materials now, including various textiles, wood and gemstone beads. Some history can be seen at my website here if you are interested (not enough points to post URL yet, but you can google steve's chotkis).

God Bless,
Chotki Steve

Is a chotki the same thing as a prayer rope?

Yes it is the same, the prayer rope has many names, depending on the region.

Here are the names I know of per region:

Greece: Komboskini
Russia: Chotki
Serbia & Montenegro: Brojanica
Romenia: Matani

Anyone know more names?
