birdie29,

Your repair problems will be in my prayers. I'm not handy with tools at all. I make myself a bloody mess every time I try to fix something, so I'm glad that Brother Dave helped you some.

No trouble/bother/inconvenience/sweat :D

There are so many manufacturers of these things, worldwide
and each producing a number of different-types

Please remember, that I have only your description to work on ? [no picture]

This said and programmers aside... they, all of them, work on a similar principle

Water supply _Heating 'section' and Heated Water Distribution /Storage*

What I have so-far gleaned [understood] is a freestanding, insulated tank ["heavy/large"]
which [to me] sounds very much like an Immersion Heater Tank
^ the most uneconomical sort of water heating/storage there is, today

To get your water heated to a satisfactory temperature [when it worked]
you had to heat the whole of the stored water
and any hot water that you did not use, was cooled
by the used-water, being replaced by cold water supply

There are a number of smaller units available, that heat ONLY the water you use
that is, they heat water on-demand
and do not store hot water [uneconomically]
ie: over bath shower unit
and: over basin water heater [similar to the shower unit]

Boiling your water in Kettles and Pans... will, see you through [with some inconvenience]

Today, installers fit service taps, to allow easy service / removal and replacement
and it seems to me, in your case...
that shutting-off the water to the heater, might also shut off all water to your home
I do hope, that is not the case for you

me too Tom, He has been useful to me in the past week in too many ways to mention. I owe him the deepest debt of gratitude.

Thanks for YOUR prayers as well. I truly believe that the prayers here that I have received here on this site and the fellowship have served to help me regroup and have given me a great deal of peace during what I consider to be a very difficult time (for me). I was just one big glob of confusion and dismay a few days ago. None of my problems have been vanquished yet, but I'm a lot calmer than I was and not nearly as frightened. I thank God for all of you. And I mean that with the deepest sincerity.

Dave, I'm going to put on some warm cloths and crawl underneath my trailer. It's cold outside and there is snow. (yuk).. I'm going to turn off the power to my home because it is very wet and damp under there. (just for safety's sake). and try and find something that might look like a shut off valve to the tank. If I find it, problem solved for now.

If I do not find one, I would like to remove the tank from the equation. Not sure why it will not drain... when I push on it I hear sloshing but it is certainly NOT full because I CAN push on it. It is huge. I'm 5'6" and I'm not sure what's taller me or the tank (lol).. and it is of the type you described (although not emerson) it is large, 40 gallon, stores hot water, has a top and a bottom element for heating with electricity. It's around 17 years old, as that is the age of my trailer and it is the original. It was probably time for it to break.

I have read about shark bite valves... I assume we have them here in the US.. they seem to be Australian made. But something easy that requires no soldering would be best for me as mobile homes catch fire quite easily and I'm inexperienced.

when capping off the hose I have PVC pipes trailer wide with what I believe to be a coper flex tub running from the trailer to the heater itself. Does that make since to you?

and finally, I like the other hot water heater type you mentions. one that just heats the water as you need it. Sounds like a good idea. I will need to redo my bathroom at some point as this is not the first plumbing problem I have experienced. I have both a tub and a free standing shower. The shower has not worked for over a year. lol (but for now, getting water back in the house will be sufficient.) lol

Immersion Heaters _ an electrically heated bar or coil immersed in water
[a kettle is very similar]

220px-Boiler_and_Cylinder.jpg
We have the similar upper portion and no storage as shown below it
~ Water heating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is similar to my view of what you have ?
¬v
Tanks141004.jpg

The immersion heater is here, seen atop the tank with supply cable attached ?
This, is pretty typical of domestic hot-water and central heating setup
where a solid-fuel back boiler/ oil-fired boiler
is supplying most of the hot water
but where an immersion heater is there for backup water heating [?]
the water circulating pump at the bottom
is feed and return to and from radiator panels AND... you can see isolating [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] either side of it ?

An electrically heated water tank
will have an immersed heating element inside the tank
regulated by temperature and timing controls [?]

hot-water-heater.jpg

^^^ water stop [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] shown

Do you have anyone living nearby that could advise you ?

NOTE:
You cannot remove the tank
WITHOUT FIRST isolating it's water and electricity supplies
for obvious dangers

DAVE GOOD NEWS. I HAVE RUNNING WATER IN THE HOUSE!!
tools needed two 10 inch groove joint pliers, two flashlights. some of that white tape for sealing water and a very inexpensive cap that just screws in place. :)
I still have a wet mess back there but I have disconnected the in and out water hoses.
Still have to disconnect the pressure thingy so I can use it again some day.
and i still have to disconnect the electric.
Now after I take it apart from the heater the electric wire will be a bare wire... how best to make it safe???

We are almost there my friend. :)

PS.... IF EVER I MAKE IT TO THE UK OR YOU MAKE IT WITHIN 200 MILES OF ME HERE THE MIDDLE US... I OWE YOU AND THE MISSES DINNER. :)

What to do with hanging cabling

The wires will doubtless come out of a fused spur-socket

You guys use different terms to us, so be sure you understand my terms
LOOK THEM UP ?

(1) TURN OFF ALL ELECTRIC [from outside the trailer]

(2) Take the cover off the spur and
(3) remove the wires that once led to the heater > marked "LOAD"
IMPORTANT >>>
>>>>>>>>>>>> LEAVING the SUPPLY Cables 'connected, to the terminals'
(4) replace the cover to the spur
Provided the socket is never subjected to water ingression
all should be SAFE as from then on

If, the heater had [it's own fuse]
ie: 'a seperate and dedicated fuse' on the user side of the Fuseboard [remove-it]
>> Leave a clear notice >> to whoever next goes to the fuseboard
that the equipment has been removed
and fuseholder should not be reconnected
and that should see you kept you safe indoors

Electricity CAN KILL
Be sure... you have it squared-away in your mind ...What and How,
you are going to do and the order in which you will do it all
BEFORE turning on the power again

DIY can and has been fatal ....

SWITCH OFF BEFORE
Check it is off
Do what you planned to do
Check it is done 'properly' (as you intended) Don't cross your fingers and hope BE SURE
Switch POWER ON

?

If you are in any doubt ..... STOP and work through it all again... mistakes can be deadly
If not to you... then to someone else

Though boilers MAY look similar.... they may be internally/ externally 'different'
and instructions may lead you astray [into error]

If you have any doubt about what I have described ASK ME
and I will draw you pictures.....STAY SAFE

Above, you will remove external wiring from the connection to power supply wiring
and LEAVE main wiring intact ...and, hopefully
UNFUSED at the consumer fuseboard [redundant wiring]

If you cannot remove a fuse at the consumer board for the heater
[There isn't one ?] Then, buy a self adhesive label that states
________________________
DANGER - LIVE CABLES BELOW
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
and stick it over the spur 'cover plate'

You will then have done, all that you can, [in your circumstances]
to keep you and others safe from harm
