  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thank you so much, Ley! All of this is helpful.

We have wall to wall carpeting throughout most of the house. Some years ago I tore the carpeting out of the kids' bathroom, kitchen, washroom and front hall (imagine--carpeting in a kids' bathroom--what an AWFUL idea!). We put down tile instead, and I have area carpets in some of those places. But the living room is still carpeted. The hearth of my fireplace is raised, and I usually keep the glass doors of the screen closed--not that it helps a lot.

Texas homes are simply not built to hold heat. Our home is all one story, sprawling over the property--not as energy efficient in winter as a multi-story home would be. But this does make sense in summer, when the temps can be over 100 degrees F for weeks at a time. It is definitely cooler then to have a house which hugs the ground.

Another problem I could address, of course, are the drafts we get under doors. Together with the flue, these probably accoount for a good deal of our heat loss.

Ley, thank you again, and tell your DH thank you as well.

And tell him I am praying for him, and for both of you.

Thanks! :)

Hi Ariel,

It sounds as if your home would benefit from draugh excluders on your doors like this one:

Good morning.
It sounds like you have a lovely weekend planned. It is so wonderful when we get to spend time with our children. I would be a very happy woman if I could do that more often with my older ones that have moved out and have families of their own now.
Have a great day.
God Bless

I have plans! My youngest daughter is coming to visit for three days and I plan on basking in her warmth because the weather promises to be brrrr cold. But that's ok. We'll be together. We might bundle up Saturday morning and go garage sale-ing and on Saturday night we're having a buffet style get together with other family and friends, and then on Sunday I get to sit next to her and hear her beautiful voice in church.
I genuinely hope everyone here has as wonderful a weekend as I know I'm going to, and that's followed up with prayer for all of you!

Oh how I wish we had a fireplace. We have a fake one, but we don't have the electric logs any longer.
We are thinking about get a pellet stove. We hear that they burn clean and really help with the heating.

Good morning all!

Here are my plans for the day: GET WARM!!!!!!

The temp this morning in West Texas was 19 degrees F, too cold for this transplanted Virginian.

I need to do something about our fireplace. It's the traditional type--log burning, although it does have a gas starter. The problem is it seems to suck the warm air out of the house every time we use it.

I've started exploring other options. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In the meantime, I am bundling up!!!!!

Edit--reading through this, it sounds like we don't have central heat--we do, we just keep the thermostat low so that our heating bill doesn't skyrocket. I just wish that we could light a fire and actually warm up the house....

We can not burn leaves anymore either.
I remember the smell of burning leaves on cool crisp autumn days. Ah that was a nice smell too.

Good Friday morning!
It is a pretty day here. We had a touch of snow/rain last night. Kids were disappointed no school. They wanted to stretch the 3 day weekend into a 4 day weekend!
I hope that you all are having a good day so far.
I really should be cleaning, but I wanted to stop in and say hi first.
I'll check in later.
Have a great day.
God Bless

Yes, I can see in densely populated areas a problem with smog and pollution. Here on the high plains of West Texas, we have no smog to speak of. There is no law against controlled burning, and certainly no problem with having a fireplace.

I use our central air to heat the house, but as I said, I turn down the thermostat so that our bill will not be sky high. We do the same in summer with air conditioning, using only what we need to to.

My enchantment with fireplaces stems from childhood. I only wish our fireplace was more efficient. And yes, you are right, I need to work on "draught control."

Here is Ley's post:

Hi Diana

This is the problem with smoke control these days
Those persons, not immediately affected, say:

"WHY SHOULD I STOP CREATING HARMFUL EMISSIONS"

Newly industrialised countries say:

"Why shouldn't we be allowed to become industrialised -JUST LIKE THE WEST"

There is, THIS
'let's LIVE FOR TODAY and sod -tommorrow' attitude... about this planet's population

Humankind, is changing [genetically]
'precocious puberty' ...'cancer'

? eight year old girls [and also much younger ? as young as three]are becoming 'women'
before, they have an adult-mind to deal with being 'grown-up'

Growth-Hormone transfer, from foodstuff to Human also is making it's mark

Whatever happened-to 'self-control' I wonder?

saying: "this 'problem' doesn't affect me,
so, I will continue to burn the MOST-HARMFUL fuels
just seems, so-wilfully selfish

It simply-put, places the BURDEN, upon succeeding generations
and all in the name of, the BIG 'buck'

Yes Claire [I acknowledge that]
but, add together
NATURAL brush Fires...
land clearance for agriculture...
Metal Foundries....
Plastics Producers...
Waste Disposal....
coal fired power-stations....
aircraft....
shipping....
road traffic....

and, then you might just see
that our atmosphere is taking one BIG pasteing from humankind [?]

So, individuals, that fail to make >their best choice
are, really/ actually saying;
"WHAT HARM WILL MY LITTLE-BIT DO"

And, I might mention
your own president Bush's reaction [non-compliance] with the Kyoto Accord
Where, when World LEADERS show disregard
in such a way, there can be little-surprise
that MANY, will follow suit
with 'similar-thinking/ like-attitude'

God made this wonderful world
and man [and woman] is destroying it
whilst 'calling themselves Christians'

As we can see, Nature has ways of, fighting back
and America is, of-course the largest polluter
of our atmosphere, in the World..
Indeed, is 'second' to none!

Not 'for-nothing' these giant storms she experiences

I respect your opinion of the cause of the storms dave but whether these are due to man made causes is up for heavy debate. I think it is ok to burn small amounts of garden clippings but I know in the city here it is banned. It is still allowed in some more rural areas though. There is no doubt that we can all be more responsible with how we steward the earths resources.

I have located a wood burning stove that could heat the WHOLE HOUSE, if I can move the air around. The problem is the price tag--$3,000. So, this is not going to happen anytime soon....

Dave, I appreciate your concern. Yes, we need to each do our bit to counter air pollution. Still, it is difficult in this wide, expansive area I live in to not want to have a fire in my fireplace on cold days, at least for a little while. In fact, our city is more concerned about dumping our garden detritus in the landfill than they are about having homes warmed by fireplaces.

What is interesting to me in my search is the number of people who say they don't rely on their central heat at all, but rather a woodburning stove, as Ley has. This is remarkable, I feel.

If you can imagine a place in the world where you can drive for hours and see almost no buildings or structures, then you can understand the minimal concern for pollution in my area. Not that we don't do our part with recycling and energy conservation. We do. Nor are we particularly messy. But air pollution is not a concern here, unless you count the high winds which travel across this land in the spring and carry dust from as much as 200 miles away.

Trees are a ostensibly a renewable resource as well. One thing I have discovered recently is that you can buy burn logs made out of recycled coffee grounds. Non polluting clean burning and very long lasting. I am not sure how expensive though. Jan

Ariel,
It sounds like you live in a much for rural area than I do! Do you have any grocery stores nearby? We have to drive about an hour to the nearest one. I would like to ask for any pointers you may have about stocking up. I have the hardest time trying to plan ahead and anticipating what we 'may' need. Thanks! I hope you get your wood burning stove soon! Someday we hope to get one too.

Good morning!
Oh it is cold here this morning. Even a hot cup of coffee doesn't seem to be making me feel warm inside.
I am so glad I don't need to go out today.

My hubby wanted me to say thank you for all you nice comments on his village. It makes him happy to know that others enjoy it.

Well I am off to do a few things around the house this morning. I will try to pop back on later.
Have a Blessed day.
