  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm singin' in the rain,
Just singin' in the rain,
What a glorious feeling,
I'm happy again!
I'm laughing at clouds,
So dark, up above,
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love.
Let the stormy clouds chase
Ev'ryone form the place,
Come on with the rain,
I've a smile on my face.
I'll walk down the lane
With a happy refrain,
And singin', just singin'
In the rain.

Lol, you guys!

Well, I went to jury duty yesterday and did my duty to God and my country...or at least to country. After much, much waiting the case settled, and I came home and tried to make up for lost time--

Today is my kiddos' last day of school. Ray, 16, continues in driver training. Brent, 14, is going to try to make the switch this summer from diving to swimming. I don't know if he will be able to--he's not in very good condition right now. He's thin, wiry and strong, but doesn't have much endurance. Well, swimming starts next week. I get to take both of them to the pool at 6:15 AM.

Greek continues. I've learned the alphabet now, Jim, and diphthongs. I'm working on accents, Mounce isn't helping much. This is where I need to find another source, and Ray Summers is still on my list of books to buy. Yesterday I started learning vocabulary. I'm up to about 10 words now, and starting to read a bit and type in Greek. This is fun!

My pond lilies are blooming!

May the Lord bless you all this lovely day, and may He keep you in the palm of His hand.

Much love,

Ariel

Blooming pond lilies! How lovely that must be. The grandbabies and I are going to make a pond in the next week or so. We wanted to buy a fountain, but money is tight so we have this huge rubber tub that we are going to try to sink part way down in the dirt, and build rocks up around it. I'm pretty sure the girls are dreaming of tadpoles and water spiders, but I'm leaning more toward the pond lillies. Any tips or advice on how to start/nurture them, Ariel?

yep! use containers for the growing medium and cover the 'COMPOST' with pebbles
to stop the BITS floating away (when immersed)
PRE-SOAK the container before immersing

expect the water to become murky for a while
hey it will settle out naturally!

Ariel, when I started learning New Testament Greek the book we used was The Elements of New Testament Greek by John Wenham. His son has brought out another version with a cd:
http://www.amazon.com/New-Testament...8956438?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180016422&sr=1-4

I only have the basic copy :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Elements-Ne...5755019?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180016350&sr=1-9

You might find it more helpful, I don't know. I wish I could help you more.

Blessings

Ley

Thank you so much, Ley!

I have a couple of resources. One is Mounce's textbook, which comes with a CD. So far the CD contains his lectures. I've been reading his book, and working in his workbook.

Better than Mounce so far has been an interactive CD, "Greek Tutor Interactive Learning System." This has been fun to use because it's not overwhelming me as much as Mounce. It's slower, and has a lot of self-tests. But it's also teaching things Mounce doesn't think is important yet, and hence the wish for another source.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll add Wenham to my list of goodies to consider. I don't know what I'll find yet at my Christian book store. Barnes and Noble was useless. When I inquired, they looked at me as if I was asking for the strangest thing imaginable. Lol.

However, Mardel's did have one copy of Mounce, which I now own, and the interactive CD.

Hooray, I'm on my way! :)

Oh Claire, what fun!

We put our pond in ourselves two years ago. It was a lot of work, but the results have been wonderful.

I planted my pond lilies in pond baskets in a pond growing medium that looks like small rocks. I didn't use any soil, the small rocks were enough. Basically, the plants are living off of the nitrogen, etc, in the water, which my fish produce. It makes for a nice ecosystem.

Here are a couple of pictures I just took:

Those pictures are lovely. Thanks. I must admit I feel a bit slothful when I think of all the energy expressed and tangibly displayed in this forum. I know I am busy but guess it is just stuff that doesn't really show up long term. I am not a gardener. Ihave tried and failed and I never take time for other creative pursuits. Can't sing at the moment due to bronchitis. Oh well at least we had a sunny day and my student is getting better/ She is off the ventilator out of Intensive Care and on the mend. Hallelujah. Jan

Jan, don't feel too 'slothful' about the idea of a pond. I have boxes and boxes of ideas in my head that will never reach fruition, but if I don't express them to other people, they surely don't stand a chance of happening! And I will most likely take short cuts that will make the whole pond experience not so delightful down the road, because that is the nature of this beast.
Just don't want you to feel left out.
In fact, you can come help dig this big hole we have planned! And you can have your choice of any one of our fine digging tools!
So, do you want the heavy duty spatula or the big wooden spoon? I have dibbs on the roasting fork.

We don't have a pond.. but we live in the middle of the woods.. and have a stream that flows through the middle of the property..

Our flowers are wildflowers..

It's wonderful to see everything coming alive after such a long winter..

I am with you there I am lucky enough to live beside a stream and forested area. And a lot of the nature I feast my eyes upon was there before I got here and I am sure will be long after I am gone. My son when he was about 5 or 6 tried to dig a pond and fill it with water but got frustrated when it all sunk out of sight.
74 items remaining...........that is what remains to be uploaded when I come into this forum...It takes so long to get here, I often just buzz off and don't even trouble to read anything, let alone write. Cheers Jim

My computer used to be very slow like that Jim and I think it was because I was networked with two other computers here at home that were busy downloading stuff on Bit Comet. it could be you need a faster or bigger computer to handle all the graphics. Don't give up on us please. Jan

Hello, all! I'm so glad you liked the pond pics!

Jan, when I read your response I couldn't help but think of that part of Scripture that describes the body of Christ. We were never meant to be all the same, and you, my dearest sister, are so wonderful and perfect in what you do. You are a minister of God's gracious love, and those around you--including us--are blessed indeed.

Lol, Jim, a pond of rocks! Well, you tried! It's interesting to hear what that pond expert said. Nine feet is shallow! Not in my estimation! Actually, before we dug, I did some reading as to how deep to go. We get ice here, so I needed at least three feet, and preferably four. The deepest part of my pond is 3 1/2 feet. The fish do well in winter, hovering at the bottom.

As for algae--every pond's scourge! This time of year I battle it. Hydrogen peroxide at least keeps it at bay until my plants cover more of the pond, which hasn't happened yet.

Claire, what fun! I was thinking, maybe you could have a "pond day," and invite friends and family to BYOS (bring your own shovel)? It's a thought? Even if you can't, though, it's not a bad thing to take it a little at a time. It took us the better part of a summer (although part of that time was getting our old concrete pond OUT). I just wanted to encourage you though, because this actually is a fun project...

GlendaJoanne, I'm green with envy! The reason we needed to put in a pond is that in my part of the world, everything is flat and uninteresting (this is West Texas, cotton country). Since my husband and I both grew up near woods and streams, we just needed something to help us imagine the wild....

Well, my day was good. 16-year-old Ray passed his written Learner's Permit test, and so will start driving next week. Yikes! Yikes! Yikes! My husband took the day off and we walked together in the early AM. It was so lovely out, lots of birds in the neighborhood trees (yes, we have trees here, but we have to plant and water them). And, of course, I got to study more Greek. This has been fun so far, I really like the interactive software. So I started verbs today, Jim, and memorized John 14:6a in Greek. I'm still working on vocabulary, I'm up to about 50 words now. The challenge for me right now is learning to spell them!

May God bless each of you, and may you have a great weekend! :)
