  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, I've been having a very lovely day!

Spring, we've been having much the same kind of weather...very wet. Still, that's better than the drought we had in the 90's. The ground was so dry it cracked, and we lost our cherry tree because of the unrelenting heat.

I've been thinking about studying biblical Greek. I've been online looking at textbooks, and I'm considering a book written by William Mounce.

Would anyone here have any suggestions?

You know, I had this thought last night. I put Claire's lovely bird in my bird album. I could post her picture for her using my photobucket account! So here she is, Claire!

Jim, can you see her now?

This morning, at breakfast, I heard the mama and the papa redbirds talking to each other so I went to the window and sure enough, we have babies. I can hear them, but I can't see them yet. But I did get a good picture of the papa doing his fair share in feeding them. And I'll post it in a while.
(Don't fret, we won't have to go through the same perils as last time :) )

Oh, Claire, what great news! If you have any trouble posting at all, let me know and I'll help.

I guess it does sound a bit much, but it's happened to me more than once that I've been studying a verse and wanted to see the original text. Well, I have software programs for that, as well as Strong's Concordance, and they help. But they still can't help me with syntax, and since Greek is an inflected language, I realize I need to know grammar and endings. The only way I'm going to be able to really look at a verse is to be able to see it. Hence the lofty ambition! I just want to know more, and understand better.

Ariel, jim1927 might be a good source of info about good authors of greek textbooks. Jan

Yes, he might be! I'm sure that Greek is a subject he mastered long ago. Even if he doesn't know some of these recent authors, I'm hoping for any tips on studying. I know this is going to be a long road...

Thank you, I most probably will do that.

I came across this poem by e.e.cummins that I wanted to share. I think it warrants merit as a wonderful piece of work by a man who was plagued with problems.

i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday; this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings:and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any--lifted from the no
of allnothing--human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

Another note on Greek. I have seen many bad interpretations made by people using Strong's texts. The people do not understand the idiom of the day. Koine Greek was the common language of the day, and it changed, as did English, by time and by region. Therefore, context is absolutely important. For the average English reader, a variety of English translations might be more helpful.

Cheers,

Jim

Claire, that is beautiful. I've read other poems by e.e. cummings, but don't recall seeing this. Maybe I was too young, lol! Thank you so much. I'm going to have to print this. Thanks!

The very best text on Greek is by Ray Summers, Essentials of New Testament Greek. It is an old text, but still used by many seminaries to-day. Mounce is also a good source, but I am a little biased on this........I still refer back to my old copy of Summers.

Happy studies,

Cheers,

Jim

Thank you so much for the suggestions, Jim!

Yes, for years now I've consulted multiple translations, and even Strong's, only to come away dissatisfied. This past Saturday I was looking at 1 Peter 4:19, a passage on Christian suffering. My multiple versions were not in agreement, and even going to the original words was not helping me. I needed to know what modifies what.

You are so right. If I am going to accurately understand, Strong's won't help. I need to know context, endings, grammar.

I've found Mounce, and now I'll be looking for Ray Summers, too. Thank you so much for your help!

Ariel,a book worth investing in is a book by Hays and Duvall, Grasping God's Word. It is a book on hermeneautics; the science of interpreting the Bible. This book will guide the reader toward a right understanding and what to look for in a text. You really need this before the language, in my opinion.

Cheers,

Jim

Thank you so much, Jim!

I've had some Bible school courses, and one of them covered hermeneutics, but probably not to the depth that your suggested text would. I'll be looking for this as well.

I really, really appreciate the help. Thanks! :)

Well, Jim, I spent part of the day learning the Greek alphabet, and will probably be snoozing in zetas tonight. Funny how you think that pi is "pie" as in the mathematical value of 3.14, and then find out its REAL Greek pronunciation is "pee." Hmmm. I guess that name would have sounded funny in my math and science classes.

Well, the school year is ending for my 14- and 16-year olds. 16-year old Ray is enrolled in a driving school, and I am already apprehensive, because I've learned that since Texas has gone to graduated licences, I will get to teach him a lot of the "on the road" driving. Help! I already use that imaginary brake when my husband drives!

Of course, then I've had the thought that maybe just maybe I could teach him to drive like I do. :)

Maybe? Or maybe I'm being optimistic?

I have jury duty tomorrow...Just think, I have the perfect past time! Greek!

Clairfish that is a lovely poem by ee cummings I only remember the stories about archie the cockroach. Anyway does it have a title. It almost sounds like he got some spiritual insight there. Jan

It is aptly called "I thank you God for most this amazing" and I am so glad you enjoyed it. I'm going to (attempt to) cross stitch it and frame it and hang it in my family room.
