  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

chicken or the egg

am i right to assume that the phrase "what came first, the chicken or the egg" relates to evolution vs creation?

if the egg came first it was evolution, because the reptile chicken had a modern day chicken egg
if the chicken came first, god created it....

this is just what i always thought...
Yes. The egg was around long before chickens.

The chicken egg came before the chicken. Although it was laid by a creature that didn't quite fit the description of chicken.:)

Imagine a spectrum...Red is the creature that fits the description of chicken. The creature that laid the first chicken egg will be just before THEE red that is the chicken and will be right at the end of the orangey reddy orangey part of the spectrum.

No. "Nature does not take leaps" said Charles Darwin. So "the reptile chicen had a modern day chicken egg" is not evolution because it is a huge leap.

In fact, this misconception is often stated by creationists as "a reptile laid an egg and out came a chicken" to supposedly show how ridiculous evolution is.

Isn't that the usual mis-statement (i.e. outright lie) used by creationists to attack punk-eek?

I think the original idea of the phrase 'Which came first the chicken or the egg?' was meant to just indicate an apparent paradox.

There are two ways of looking at the problem:

1) That the 'egg' in any form came way before the chicken, in that fish, amphibians and reptiles all lay eggs and they all certainly came before the chicken.

2) That a creature minutely different to the chicken laid an egg which contained a creature that had slightly mutated from it's parents to become what today would be classified a chicken.

And no stupid comments about reptiles becoming chickens because a chicken would have mutated from another type of bird.

What about reptiles (such as dinosaurs), amphibians? Don't they lay eggs? Were they not in existance further back in the past than chickens?

Nope, I'm a creationist therefore they were all around together... and the chicken was definitely before the egg. :D

Where do you think birds came from? I am not saying that it is 100% a reptile, but birds were not around 250 million years ago.. thus birds must have come from non-birds. Whatever it came from though, most likely had teeth. Birds have the genes used to create teeth.

Why cant people state what they believe and have it be that way? Because some don't agree with the idea that we came from a rock floating around billions of years ago? I believe in creation just the way it's written, same as many believe in Darwinism just the way that is written. Maybe the first chicken was carrying the first egg.

Because reality is not beholden to conform to your beliefs. If you believe the earth is flat, it doesn't mean the earth really is flat.

Of course, your beliefs are not beholden to conform to reality either, so I guess it evens out...

Namaste,

actually, i think it's just that way for most folks... however, that doesn't mean that they are correct.

by that logic, me saying that i believe Barney the Dinosaur is Prsesident of the Ukraine would make that so. now... i'm not saying that it is or isn't so, however, by simply asserting my belief it in no way indicates the correct nature of the issue.

I was just saying that people who dont believe in creation are entitled to their opinion, same as I am. But just because some believe that we came from a rock doesnt mean I have to take their word for it, anymore than they have to take mine. Some say since we can't "prove" creation or God then it isn't so, why? Thats their belief. My belief is based on faith, can I prove faith? No. Can I prove Barney the dinosaur isn't the president of Ukraine? Probably.
