You see, when people go on a long-haul flight from Auckland NZ to Los Angeles, they don't see themselves going over the edge to the top side of the world because it is usually dark outside and they are asleep. Or else, like the movie Langaliers, a sleep comes on them and when they wake up they don't know that they have been asleep.
