I run Avast & MalwareBytes on the window machines here (7 & 8) and has worked very well...free versions, get 'em at FileHippo.com - Download Free Software ..also run Spybot and CCleaner.

..and run Sophos on the mac though nothing ever comes up ;)

Are you suggesting to download AntiVirus Software from a File sharing site when the AntiVirus software is normally available from the manufacture itself ?

The paid version of Malwarebytes.org is pretty good. A friend of mine has only that and AVG free on a Windows 7 machine and they keep it functioning.
On my fastest machine (4 cores) I use Bitdefender, I got a license which is supposedly for 3 PC:s (haven't tried it out on more computers yet), really cheap, about $15. It finds many viruses. Also it doesn't seem to slow down this computer. The reason the computer has viruses is because the previous owner didn't update Windows regularly. It's Windows 8.1 (engineer) student license.
Kaspersky is good but expensive and usually overkill. Also I'm not sure whether there's a single machine license available right now. If You install it together with the paid version of Malwarebytes on an older dual core machine, it slows down considerably, but I haven't tested on triple core or quad core.

I'm an in home computer tutor and virus removal specialist here in Honolulu Hawaii. For Pre-Windows 8, average user I use Microsoft Security Essentials. Be sure to download FROM the Microsoft site as there was once a computer virus by that name.

For those who need greater security I use Avast and set up there account as a standard account as opposed to admin.

Oops almost forgot. I wrote an article I this but cannot share the link yet due to post count. For Windows 8 and above DO NOT buy additional antivirus software. Windows 8 and 8.1 both contain Windows Defender which is an enhanced version of Microsoft Security Essentials. Places such as Best Buy are always trying to sell additional security even when it is not necessary.
