That info is false. The real salary is about half that.
Even at half, it serves as an excellent example of the original problem and question - "Charities without ridiculous OTT salaries, do they exist? If so where might one find them?"
The Red Cross spends a small fraction of its revenue on administrative expenses. It's a pretty efficient organization. Considering how much they bring in, and how vast an organization it is, you wouldn't hire a CEO for $40K.
Maybe you yourself wouldn't hire a CEO for 40k, but that statement of not hiring a CEO for 40k is untrue. It depends on many things such as where your CEO is based, or the altruism and willingness of your CEO to shoulder the work in the most cost effective way possible.
As for 'pretty efficient' - so are the mafia but I'm not asking about efficient vs inefficient organisational behaviour.
At the other extreme, I know one CEO who works voluntary. Adi Roche of Chernobyl Children International. I'd hoped there would be Christian charities that people knew of that were more like this one but alas, nobody knows any.
- here are the accounts up to this year. Chernobyl Children International - Financial.
