  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As some of you know, I was a journalism major at my school with a print emphasis.

Notice the word "was" :)

About two weeks ago I offically changed my major to English with an emphasis in writing. I really think this was a good choice for me.

After last semester, I came to the conclusion that Journalism was not completely where my heart was. I missed deeply being able to write creatively, being able to write about my faith in devotionals and poetry. I missed writing fictional novels too. That was one of the bigger ones.

I couldn't do any of that being a journalism major because my writing had to be completely factual, non-biased, no opinions, I felt I was was too restricted in my own writing, especially when I wanted to be expressive in what I was writing about, but I couldn't be.

So I changed my major, but I haven't lost my respect for journalism, not in the least bit. Because I still want to write for a Christian devotional magazine someday, and I want to write Christian novels for young adults.

I don't have many other ideas for what else my major can bring me that I might go for, but I want to go where the Lord leads me. Which means leaving my future to him, and the present to both of us really. Frankly I'm excited for my future if this is where I am meant to go. :)

What about you guys? I'm sure the majority of you have changed your majors for certain reasons at one time or another. What are your stories?

I'm sorry, but I do not support anyone who does not change their major to physics. ^_^

But seriously, I never changed my major in college. I came in as a physics major, and left as a physics major (or graduate, rather). The closest thing I did was drop my second major in math in the middle of my junior year. But then I missed math too much, took it back up, and took six math courses in my last year just to catch up...managed to get mostly A's and a couple B's too.

I know, lame story. The worst part is that after overdosing on math, I didn't really like it so much. Doesn't matter though, since I'm going to grad school in physics.

Well I have not changed my major, and graduation has been a LONG time coming - I took 2 years off academicallf for $$ reasons. Anyway, this spring I'll be graduating with an MIS (Management Information Systems) degree. However, God has shown me that I will not be happy in a cubicle and has opened my eyes to another desire of my heart - teaching. Though I have not oficially changed my major, I have changed the direction of my life. Also, with a computer degree and teaching degree I'll be able to go almost anywhere for missions.

I changed majors about 5 times. I started as a Computer Science Major. I loved it and the program I was in, but I changed schools for money reasons and hated the new program. I started working and was burned out of school. I went back to become a Business major, thinking I wanted to make some money. However that was not satisfying. I've always enjoyed teaching and thought that a Secondary Education major would be awesome. Then I really got serious with God and went to Bible College, where I finally finished my BBS degree. There I got a great dose of apologetics and found philosophy really enjoyable. So now I'm doing my MA in philosophy.

I agree that missions with both degrees will be extremely beneficial. I have a large dose of Computer underneath my belt and I have thought about going and helping missions with computers. However my goal now is to train Christians to go out. I would like to get a PhD in philosophy to help Christians think about their beliefs, so they are solid and can share them with others, and help non-Christians think about their beliefs, so they can finally come to Christ.

i decided senior year high school I wanted to be a counseling psychologist and never once did i consider anything else. im about to start on my masters but one thing has changed. That is I am looking foreward to what i will be doing outside of my proffesional life more than what i will do as a psychologist. My real desire is to write books to encourage christians and self-help type stuff and being a liscensed proffesional counselor fits into that as providing the credentials and experience to write something people may want to read. writing books probly isn't a good career but i guess if you get good enough you get payed to speak at places and give seminars.

I started college as an electrical engineering student, and nearly completed the program. Because of dexterity issues that made the program physically painful, I switched to the English program and graduated with a BA in English and a specialty in technical writing. My transcript is very strange...

I'm excited that other people wrote about their majors and missions, as missions was what I always wanted to do, and I now work for a missions agency, designing and authoring materials for print and the Web to promote missions.

It's ironic, puppyforChrist, because I was thinking the other day that I wished I had taken a journalism class in college. I received a long, drawn-out story from a missionary to use in one of our publications. It was interesting, but too long, and told completely in chronological order, with the best stuff at the end. I drastically changed the order of the story so it got to the point a little quicker, with added details at the end, but I wished I was better at really crafting a story from the available sources.

Best of luck to you in your efforts to become a writer who impacts eternity!

Lets see..... I came into college as a chemical engineering major. Was that for about a semester and a half until I actually realized what a chemical engineer does. Concluded it wasnt very interesting to me and switched to mechanical engineering.

Did mechanical engineering for another 3 semesters and started realizing that most of the things a mechanical engineer doesnt arnt very interesting.

At this point I was about 2 years though college so changing majors was looking a little rough. I had covered all the core engineering courses and have always liked computers so I made the switch to a computer systems engineering major.

I stuck that out for a whole semester and then realized that I would be required to take a couple math courses I really had no interest in taking. So I changed majors again.... to computer science.

Computer science at my college has minimal requirements outside of its core courses and I concluded that I could change to it and still graduate on time.

So here I am a senior computer science major with 3 courses and 10 weeks of the semester left to complete. I really dont like the major but I have a job lined up for after graduation. I really dont like the job, but I figure I can atleast go back to college after a couple years in hopes that I will actually know what I want to do. And if all else fails I will just live in a van down by the river....

I changed my major from Psychology to Political Science. I wanted to do something that would help make the world a better place. I thought that by being a psychologist I could make a difference in people's lives individually but I realized that I couldn't just listen to people's problems, offer tests and possible solutions, and not take a more active role. I feel like I could maybe (I know I'm a bit idealistic) make bigger changes that would help an entire state or country by getting into politics. Besides, I have a big mouth that would be more useful in politics than in therapy.

I might be the queen of changing majors...or at least the queen of changing majors unofficiallly. I started political science, then I wanted to switch to social work, then I actually switched to math education, then I thought about a combo of music and religion, and then I considered religion by itself, and then I finally changed to spanish education and I love it and I probably will not change it. I finally found the right one I do believe.

Don't get me started on that please. I am currently torn as to whether I should change my program from a general BA with a concentration in History to a BA with an English major and French minor.

FYI: I've been told that minors are more or less worthless. I found out my last semester that I could get an astrophysics minor by taking just one course. But my advisor suggested that I forget about it, and just take another physics course.

Just in case that helps with your priorities regarding what classes to take.

Nope. The French minor I would need requires ten courses of that subject.

I started as a Physics major, then I got about 4 weeks into my first undergrad physics course, and changed to Chemical Engineering. Then I got about 2.5 years into that and changed to Mechanical Engineering. One of the best education-related decisions I've made.
