Hello all

Just my own curiosity getting the better of me again :)

I was wondering if anyone knows the significance (if any) of the circle on a celtic cross? I've come across one or two explanations during my periods of online browsing...but I figured the CF forums might be give me a more reliable answer!

Thanks,

Astral

According to the book Christian Symbolism In The Evangelical Churches, by Dr. Thomas Albert Stafford, Abingdon-Cokesbury Press (1942), pg. 69-71:

"The Celtic or Irish Cross, and is sometimes called the Cross of Iona, because an ancient example is found on the Isle of Iona in western Scotland. Iona is the point at which the Irish missionaries first established a foothold in Scotland. Without a doubt, it is one of the most interesting variant forms of the Latin cross having ecclesiastical origin... The circle is emblematic of eternity. Probably, the original intention in using the circle was to signify the eternal effect of the redemption secured on the cross by the death of Christ. The vertical member of this cross tapers and the slightly bulging effect known as entasis is sometimes employed in designing the upright part."
