I'll move this to the appropriate forum after we've discussed it some, but I wanted to talk to y'all about our rules.

The site's going through yet another upheaval - as far as lowly mods are concerned - and I realised how restrictive our No Debate rule is so now would be a decent time to change it, if you're willing. It's causing a bit of confusion and prevents our getting opinions from others. Would any of you want to scrap that particular rule, too?

I suppose it'd render our Sub-forum obsolete, but it doesn't get any traffic, anyway.

We initially wanted no debate in here because we were few, and we felt terribly under attack, but it seems to have settled down now, and I still think we may be missing an opportunity to witness to people.

What do you think?

Why don't you move debate threads into the debate subforum (where they belong (and force the members to utilize that forum for what it was created for (it is always hard to do that in the beginning))), and that way it would open those threads up to debate while keeping the main forum for fellowship and other types of discussion. I don't mind having those who aren't members debate in the debate forum, but I'd prefer to keep the main forum less stressful. Sometimes I get really tired of debate and want to just go where there is fellowship and concerns and cares being offered.

I think that we need the protection of the no debate rule to give us the ability to fight unwanted ideologies and people that come here looking for a fight. It also gives us the ability to fellowship with non-members of CC that would otherwise turn to debates and most likely, hurt feelings.

We are a multi-denominational forum based on our conservative beliefs so liberals or people that do not share our beliefs should not be allowed to debate here. We, of course, welcome everyone in fellowship.

I think that we should be able to debate and defend what we believe. If there are problems then that is what the mods are for. I am not against debate, just poor manners.

Sounds like there's good reasoning on both sides of this issue.

One thing that I think I've noticed is that if no debating goes on in the main forum, the forum languishes. We ask each other pleasant and passing things that don't lead to discussion. We appear to be in danger, at times, of running out of threads that talk about very much.

Meanwhile, those coming here to talk about religious or social issues tend to overlook subforums.

These are used mainly when someone wants to move an existing debate that got started on the main forum despite our wishes for it to be kept separate--IOW after the fact. Visitors don't seem to go straight for any forum's subs, but think of the main forum as the place to talk to the members about whatever is on their minds.

Perhaps we should put our fellowshippy threads in a sub-forum instead. You know...just switch it around. *shrug* I don't know...just a thought.

Personally, I feel as Dawn does. I get tired of debate and I like a peaceful atmosphere.

Hi Bill,

Debate by members is allowed under the present rules and debate by non-members is allowed in the debate subforum. The purpose for the rule is to keep non-members from debating in the main forum. So, if we change the rules, then debate by non-members would be allowed in the main forum. I don't think that is a good idea.

Hi. I only came upon this question a few minutes ago and have been thinking on it ever since, hoping to get a clear direction in my own mind. It's tough, I think. But here's another possibility--

If I am correct as I wrote a few posts back that part of the problem is that main forum is what most people tend towards, overlooking the subforums that are seldom very active, the best solution might be the obvious. And what is that, you ask?

Permit any discussion/debate topic begin on the main forum and then have the mods move it to the debate subforum if it takes off.

I have never seen much controversy about that. It's just in a different place. People get very upset about reports in general and charges of violating the rules, etc. but moving a debate to a subforum where it continuse on seems to me to be a recognized mod function. To do this it probably would require a written statement that the sub is where we want these things, but if that is not noticed or if a debate unexpectedly breaks out, simply move it.

The key here is to be on top of the situation. Provocative non-members posting in the main forum will still not be a problem so long as one of our alert mods--and I do have confidence in them--simply announces the move before fifty or sixty increasingly nasty posts get posted.
