In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Any thoughts or comments on this news? I also put it up on the NCR board for the Muslims to see their reaction.

TESTING THE FAITH
Bishop urges Christians to call God 'Allah'

Catholic leader believes it would help ease tensions between religions

I'm a Catholic and I don't think I'll be taking the good bishop's advice.

God's peace,

I wont call God Allah.
Whether I know what it means
or not, it's associated with a
different god. Not our God, Jehovah.

From what I've read, I think it's a name
AND a title, but I'm not sure.

We will offend other religions,
and it's the name of Jesus Christ
that's offensive to them.

The enemy HATES that name.

God exalts His NAME above all, and
His Word above all of His NAME.

would you rather LIE to them and tell
them all is cool, or tell them the offensive
truth, that it's through JESUS CHRIST alone
that salvation comes.

You can say allah in the pub schools, just don't
get caught saying the name of JESUS CHRIST!

There IS no other name under Heaven by which
men must be saved.

He is worth standing for.

Matt 10
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men,
him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men,
him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth:
I came not to send peace, but a sword.
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father,
and the daughter against her mother,
and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me:
and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of mehttp://www.christianforums.com/newreply.php?do=postreply&t=5921679#_ftn1

shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

You know, after I posted and headed off to bed I was thinking along these same lines last night Suncritter and do agree somewhat. Arabic christians praise ~Allah~ (name in Arabic/title in English) FOR ~Jesus Christ~ the name above all names.

At the first I myself agreed and was speaking for Arabic christians on their behalf, I certainly dont judge them. I know very little. As for "myself" (being somewhat doubtful per that thread) I would not (via the bishops request) change how I refer to God to make others more comfortable. But you are right, its not that "title" (in English/Name in Arabic) that is dissallowed but Jesus Christ. I still would not sacrifice my conscience (in going against it) over the deal just because some guy wants to make others more comfortable (who could care less about our own convictions).

The NT was written in greek, so all you guys sayin' Jesus out there must be prayin' to a neighbor or something... cause the name is Iisou ;)
Is the god of islam, the same God we serve?

The Islamic god is most certainly NOT our God !

But the words Christians use for the Christian God vary by language.
So, for example, many US Christians use the name Holy Ghost, EO usually use the name Holy Spirit.

My Arabic speaking Christian friends use the word Allah. In no way are they confessing Islam when they do so.

I'm just trying to point out that language differences do not mean belief differences.

EDIT: Christianity predates Islam -- their use of the word is a rip-off :D

Hi there firecritter.
Hope you slept well.

Right, I just think we have stand strong against the wiles
of the enemy.
Always covert and seemingly harmless little things.

Things that seem pc, can be anti Christ.

I don't understand what it would accomplish either.
They need to hear the straight truth.
That Jesus Christ is Lord,
that Jesus Christ came to redeem us.

It's by the blood of the lamb,
not by making people 'feel' comfortable.

It's GOOD news, sheesh
why hide it under a bushel?

imo only.

I understand that.
But you see my pov.

For me, allah isnt my God.

As I said, I don't know the language
and I dont know if it's just a title or
also a name.

As in, "our 'allah' is Jehovah".

So when a muslim says "allah" he's not speaking
of our Lord, and I personally wont use his word
out of fear of offending.

I doubt muslims prefer so anyhow.
They know there's a difference.
imo.

Although I don't agree with the article in the OP, we used to attend a Church where, on any given Sunday, we used up to four languages(english greek, palestinian arabic, ukranian, and sometimes lebanese arabic) in the service (Liturgy). On Easter morning, we used more languages (traditionally done at all EOs at this service).

Anyway, I guess I'm more accustomed to a variety of languages referring to the same thing. And I cherished that so many tongues could be united by one Lord in heart :amen:

Often, I was united by the love of Jesus with brothers and sisters who I couldn't even converse with due to a language barrier.

When a pagan says 'god' he is not speaking of our God, so would you use the term God ?

I think part of the problem is folks are equivocating Arabic with muslims or Islam. That would be like equating English with pagans or Wicca.

I understand your point.
PLease try to understand mine as well.

If you had read my posts you'd see that this
is not what I'm saying, although I know this
happens.

I personally do NOT know if allah is merely a title
or if it's also a name, as some say it is.

So I personally will not conform to the OP, nor
would I condone it.

But, even if it is a matter of language only, it's
already been established in my country as a term
used for the god of islam.

I have sikh friends. They call their god "God".
We're not talking about the same god, and
I don't embrace any part of their beliefs even
if they're seemingly 'similar' to ours.

Counterfeiting is a trick of the enemy of our souls.

So IF allah is also a name, i am safe because I'm not using it.
:D

You all do as YOU all see fit.

Hi. What about "HAYAH"?

I was taking a closer look at this passage in Exodus 3 and was wondering if the hebrew word 01961 ha-yah is 2 seperate words hyphenated, and the meaning appears to signify "SHALL BE". Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

http://www.scripture4all.org/

Exodus 3:13 And Mosheh is saying unto 'Elohiym , `Lo, I am coming unto sons of Yisra'el, and I say to them, 'Elohiym of your fathers He sends me unto you, and they have said to me, What [is] His Name? what do I say unto them?'
14 And 'Elohiym saith unto Mosheh, "I-shall-be/01961 ha-yah who I-shall-be/01961 ha-yah". And-He saying `Thus dost thou say to the sons of Yisra'el, I-shall-be/01961 ha-yah He-sent-me unto-you.'
15 And 'Elohiym saith again unto Moses, `Thus dost thou say unto the sons of Yisra'el, YHWH, 'Elohiym of your fathers, 'Elohiym of Abraham, 'Elohiym of Yitschaq, and 'Elohiym of Ya`aqob, hath sent me unto you; this [is] My name--to the age, and this My memorial, to generation--generation.

Used 43 times in 40 verses as

"I-shall-be" "I-am-becoming" "I-shall-become"

The big difference is weather or not Allah is a name or title.

If it's a title then it's no different than saying 'god', 'him', 'lord', 'almighty', 'master', or 'the man upstairs'. You could call any god by those titles and believe in the wrong god. You could call the christian God by those titles and be correct in doing so (Though I think the 'man upstairs' is irrevrent).

However if you try to call the christian God by the name 'Jupiter', 'Zeus', 'Ba'al', or 'Neptune' for example, this would be incorrect since they are names none of which are the name of the God christians worship. So, if 'Allah' is a name, calling the God 'Allah' would be incorrect.

It may be possible that 'Allah' could refer to both depending on the context.

Of course since YHWH and Jehovah et. al. are the words that Jews (who worship a different God than Christians), then we shouldn't use those either ;)
The Jews do not read the NT/NC and would probably understand it better than most Christ-ians in my view [including Messianics]. ;)

Well, do Jews worship a different god, or do they just not recognize everything He has revealed to us?

except that Christianity predates Islam; if Arabic speaking Christians have always used "Allah", the term is correct ...

In that case, Muslims would have created a different god with the same name. Much the way cults take the name 'Jesus' and create a different version.

yeah, exactly !

Mohamed used to visit monasteries in Syria; he traveled with his merchant uncle. According to an EO Priest (son and grandson of Mullahs) Mohamed lifted a lot from Christianity. I don't want to let Islam "own" anything of Christ's :)
