  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let me ask you this, do you believe what Jesus said in Matthew 16:18?

What Christian doesn't????

But the question is...…..do you know the contextual meaning of what Jesus said, not what a Catholic teacher has told you what it says.

What Jesus said was not about Peter and the church at all. OPEN your Bible and read what Peter said when Jesus asked him who He (Jesus" was.

"Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God".

Jesus based His "Rock" not on Peter but on what PETER ACTUALLY SAID in his confession.

CONTEXT brother......do the work to show thy self approved a workman for God.

The Roman church was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 1054AD my friend.

True, but what about 1965?

Wasn't there a Catholic-Orthodox Joint declaration of 1965 that lifted the mutual excommunications dating from 1054.

Yes. But it has nothing to do with that verse.

Matthew 16:18 Jesus says the gates of Hell will not prevail against His church. Do you believe what He said is true or do you believe that His church lost its way?

Where is sola scriptura supported in the scriptures?

Luke 10:26:
"What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?"

Jesus expected even his enemies to correctly interpret the Bible by simply reading and studying it. Unlike Jesus, Catholics and Orthodox don't ask you what you think scripture says, they just tell you how their church interprets it and you have no choice but to accept what they tell you.

I’m not Catholic and never have been. When Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail against it He was referring to His church. So where was His church for the first 1500 years of Christianity?

But the Orthodox Church has the writings to back up their beliefs going all the way back to 180AD and on some topics even farther. Where’s the evidence of your church in 180AD or even 200AD or any time before 1500AD?

NO sir He was not. He was referring to what Peter said that...……"Jesus is the Son of the living God".

That statement is what Jesus built His church on......Not Peter.

Once, when the question was put to me on these forums, I produced 19 different verses that put Scripture in a category of its own, authority-wise. So that is why I now mainly take the familiar line ("The Bible does not say anything about Sola Scriptura!") as something of a joke whenever it surfaces.

It was all over the former Roman Empire, from Britain to North Africa to India and also into Ethiopia and Russia. Most of that time preceded the break-up of the universal, non-denominational, church into the divisions we know now--RC, EO, OO, Anglican, Arminian, reformed, etc.

The church of Christ has obviously not had the gates of hell prevail against it, since it is the largest religion in the world, most widespread, and is still expanding.

Really? What was it called? Where can I find evidence of its existence before 1500AD?

Yes but according to what Jesus said it had to exist before 1500AD. So where was it? What was it called? Where can I find evidence of its existence?

Consult history books. I often recommend A History of the Christian Church by Williston Walker and Christianity by Roland Bainton. Both authors are highly regarded. This is fairly routine stuff, but you cannot ask me or anyone else to recount the whole history of Christianity in a discussion board post. :sigh:

It was called the Catholic Church which was the only Christian church that existed before 1500AD. They adopted the name Orthodox meaning traditional when Rome was excommunicated in 1054AD.

IMHO, you REALLY would profit from a reading of such works as I recommended.

What is the word “it” Jesus is referring to here?

That is not the point is it?

IT of course is the church.

However the church was NOT founded upon Peter. THAT was the point.

The church was founded upon the confession of Peter when he was asked by Jesus who he thought Jesus was. And Peter's answer was...…….."You are the Christ, the Son of the living God".

That confession is the cornerstone of the church.....not Peter.
