Although I am Orthodox, I'll answer.

God is not limited to time but exists outside of time. The sacrifice of Christ while temporally happened at a certain time, effects the salvation for all who through faith and perseverence come to Him. One example of this is the fact that Christ died for everyone, including those that are yet to be born, so His sacrifice projects into the future, likewise it projected into the past when he led the captives out of Hades by His death.

So He is Risen indeed, and sits at the Right hand of the Father, even though we portray Him on the Cross in Icon and Crucifixes.

CCRunner, it is usually best to open a new thread in the appropriate forum when there is a radical change in subject (such as 'how did you come to faith ?'). This way those that might want to respond or read the subject will know it is there.

Get the truth from a CATHOLIC!

The crucifix is a symbol of Chist's sacrifice for us. One of the most inspiring things I have ever seen is a crucifix with no nails. There are no nails in Jesus' hands (wrists) or feet. It shows how nails can't hold Hold Jesus down, He could have hopped down off that cross if He wanted to, but because of His love for us He didn't. This particular crucifix shows that it was His love that held him to the cross, not the nails.

i was wondering why on the Catholic cross(or crucifixe)they have jeasus on the cross? Didnt he raise from the dead and is now with god?is it just symbolic or part of the belief? im protestent so i wouldnt know.
Greetings, CCRunner.

In one sense, the Cross versus Crucifix is simply a difference in theological perspective.

But we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles 1 Cor. 1:23

Now, Paul also preached of the Resurrection. Neither "Christ crucified" nor "Christ Risen" is necessarily 'wrong' or 'right.' Just slightly different aspects of the one Glorious event.

The crucifix is both a symbol and a reality. There are several positive points that can be said in favor of the crucifix:

1. It is a better symbol for us. Since the Mass (or the "Divine Liturgy" in the Eastern/Orthodox rites) is viewed as the re-presentation of the sacrifice of Calvary (in unbloody form), having the symbol of the original form is quite appropriate. As Oblio correctly noted, God stands outside of time, so past, present, and future are all immediate to God at once. Calvary was 'once for all' (in human, chronological terms) but is "timeless" from God's perspective. When we celebrate the Mass, we enter "God's time" and try to view the world from the eternal perspective of past, present, and future. The past (Calvary) is 'made present' to us.

2. I am wounded in my sin, and in the crucifix I see a Savior that Himself was wounded, and so I am comforted to know He understands.

3. The Catholic Church fought the early heretics, groups like the Docetists who denied that God actually came in the flesh. The Crucifix is a reminder of the reality of the Incarnation (which is likewise expressed so beautifully in our theology of the Eucharist).

4. And if some conclude that Catholics shouldn't display the crucifix since Christ was taken down from Cross, then they shouldn't display the Cross, because the Cross on Calvary was taken down. (Ok, I'm being a bit tongue-in-cheek here; though I still like the sublime logic of it all. ;) )

I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Chill out. Oblio is a good guy...and he knows a lot about anything Catholic, Orthodox, etcetera...

If the Catholics on this board need a fullback, he usually volunteers, even though he is in schism with the Church... ;)

Um, hate to burst your bubble, but you may want to get the facts straight, before posting disrespectful comments such as the one above.

Oblio happens to know a lot about both the Orthodox and the Catholic faiths, probably more than most people around here, so chill out already.

You've been here 5 minutes and already you are acting like you own the place, which I can safely assume (and hope!) you don't.

With only 14 posts, you are hardly one to start throwing your weight around. In future, be aware that this forum is not only for Catholic folk.

Everyone has the right to answer a question here.
