Angels may be heard on high this holiday season, but according to one Catholic church official, they don’t have wings.

Catholic Church "angelologist" Father Renzo Lavatori says angels do exist, but are surrounded by shards of light, not wings, according to a Sky News report.

"I think there is a re-discovery of angels in Christianity," Father Lavatori said at a conference in Rome this week. But he suggests the traditional portrayal of angels as winged cherubs is not accurate.

Um, yeah.

Light is a physical entity too, and it can't be connected to angels for the same reason as wings.

I, myself, have never seen an angel. Although, I do believe I heard one speak when I was having some haunting problems at my house. I heard an angel command a demonic spirit to leave me alone.
I've seen demonic entities around my house. They look somewhat like these pics... (see attachments).

Angels cannot be seen. We can only detect by our senses which detect things of the material, changing world. Angels belong to a reality that cannot be perceived.

The OT suggests that angels can emit information that can be detected by the senses. Nevertheless, whatever people perceived about angels should not be considered an aspect of angels.

I was thinking about angels about a week or two ago

ok, we say angels are "spiritual beings"
the Eastern Orthodox describe them as "bodiless powers" or sometimes "bodiless intellects"

normally when we think of "spiritual beings" we think of "spirit" as just being some kind of exotic matter that is different then regular elements

but I think this is an overly simple way to understand it

these are just my own assumptions
please do not take my ideas too seriously

what other spiritual beings do we know of other then angels and demons?

well God the Father and the Holy Spirit and pre-Incarnate Christ are spiritual Persons
Pre-Incarnate Christ is called the "Word of God" but "Word" is a kind of loose translation of the Greek concept of Logos
if you study ancient Greek Philosophy you know that Logos has much deeper meaning then the modern English understanding of Word
Logos can be translated as "Organized Thought"
the Organized Thought of God through which all things were made

so if the Logos is a spiritual being
angels are lesser spiritual beings, God is uncreated and angels are created, the power of God is infinite, as is His wisdom, while angels are finite in power and wisdom, like humans

but both angels and God are spiritual beings, so maybe angels are like lesser logos, individual orginized thoughts rather then THE Organized Thought of God

I apologize if my musings sound gnostic or pantheistic

Maybe they don't. A lot of what we imagine the symbols of our holy Catholic faith to look like are what artists of centuries ago thought they looked like, for example the bearded, gentrified image of God, or Caucasian Jesus, etc. Angels with wings is another one of those.

Wings symbolise speed, just like eyes symbolise wisdom, I think. See if you can dig up some patristic commentary on Ezekial 10 or Revelation 4

Also, in Orthodox iconography, St. John the Baptist is shown with wings because he is a messenger, like angels.
