  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi there.... I'm just wondering out of interest if there is anyone here who has ever converted from Protestant to the Catholic way. What committed you to change your ways? And how different does it feel now?

I'm really really interested in your replies

i converted... what caused me to change was i felt that the truth is in the Catholic Church. it is the church that Jesus started and I feel that if Jesus thinks its good enough then it should be good enough for me. it feels different because I feel more complete now that I am in the Catholic Church. I dont have a problem with what Protestant churches do but what they dont do. i dont think they do enough and are incomplete and the Catholic church is complete.

I'm one of many convert's here :)

I am literally 'reborn in Christ',and into Catholicism as i was baptised Catholic at the age of 35!

The killer point's for my conversion were

1. Eucharist

2. Education of Catholicism led me to many ultimate Truths....and what i learned astounded me...one of which is that the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is the Church founded by Christ (Math 16:18).

3. The Holy Father

4. Blessed Virgin Mary

5. the Sacramental life

..that's just for starters :)

God Bless you.

I am in the process, it is a wonderful experience. I will be officially part of the Church in Easter.

I don't know what got me to change, I truly believe it was the Lord guiding me. No one ever pushed or encouraged me to join. It was just, I started feeling pulled. The more I looked into it, the more I liked what I saw, the more I saw the beauty in the Church.

There are many others here who are also converts. So, if you feel you are being pulled, guided or oddly curious about it, that is perfectly normal and you wouldn't be alone. I can't express how happy I am to be part of the Church now, it has made me a much better person.

If you have any questions, we'd love to help you out and answer any. OBOB seems to be attracting a lot of curious people lately :)

Hi there MParedon and BJBarnett!
I'm a Christian but not Catholic. I teach in a Catholic school in the UK and am absolutely loving it. I'm learning about Catholicism everyday as I'm at the school and can see loads of things that are there that arent in "normal" (can I say that?) christianity.
A phrase that I like to say is "Same dish different gravy!"

*smiles* Welcome to OBOB, Erica. I'm a cradle Catholic myself, but as you see there are many converts here. Some recent, some who have a longer way behind them. Each of them has their own 'points' that did it for them. But things that often come through are the eucharist and the feeling of being guided here.

Yeah... sorry it is Christian I know!
Thing is you see i've been around quite a bit of teaching that says that Catholicism isnt Godly because of the added things etc. And I know that quite a few others people in this world have also been taught that its wrong etc etc. But people have their own ways of worship and God loves every one of us the same. He is the same God that we are worshipping and thats enough for me!

One thing really new to me that I only learnt the first day of school was the sign of the cross before praying - thats really symbolic isnt it? And it kinda inspired me a little bit to look into it more

Love and hugs

I converted in 02. I have attended Mass on and off for the previous 21 years though. I go every Sunday now. As a child I attended a non-denom "Personal Lord and Savior" type of church. I always sort of felt Catholic. I converted because I beleive the Catholic Church to be the original Church and the one which has the complete Deposit of Faith.

I have a non-Catholic friend who recently started teaching at a Catholic school. She has questions from time to time, and I just love sharing the interest with her.

I'm a recovering lapsed Catholic and one of the things that really brought me back to the Church is the idea of Objective Truth. That Truth doesn't rely on my opinion about it. That I can't change Truth even though I can put together a seemingly convincing aurgument (believe me, I've tried, lol). That the teachings of the Church don't change because of majority vote (I like that, because I don't think Truth is subject to majority vote).

Also some of the things that I really appreciate about the Church is it's teachings about prayer, and the Sacramental life. Those two are really biggies for me.

Well, what Catholics believed was believed long before the bible was ever created. It's really the newcomer, coming after Tradition and the Church.

It's really not that we added anything, it's that Christianity has dropped things. For example, baptism seems to be the next thing Christians are losing.

I'm a revert. Grew up Catholic, strayed away in sin, conversion into Protestantism. But after about 5 years of Protestantism I found that I was stuck at a plateau of wisdom and depth of love for Christ because the churches were so focused on social issues or semantics. I had read the Bible cover to cover at least 5 times at that point and blew through all the great commentators. Also many issues were dividing churches and when I looked at different denominations, there was just too much in each of them that I couldn't agree with.

Slowly God put some Catholics in my path and as I was completely and totally against the Catholic Church at that time I proudly rejected their perspectives. But God is faithful and I was convicted that I needed to check it out. I read the Early Church Fathers, the great Saints who had such profound love lives with Jesus and the Catechism. Through prayer and reflection I found the truth of the Church laid bare for me and I couldn't reject it any longer. Of course then I had to make a confession for 15 years ugh!

Since my reversion I have found such a vast depth of faith and growth that I know I can never hit a wall again. A 2000 year old faith will keep me entrenched forever! Too much profound truth to meditate and emulate. It's the most beautiful change that has ever occurred in my life and I have never been so united with Christ.

Oh yeah and the Eucharist, and confession, and Mary, and.....:)

Well, technically, since over 50% of all Christians in the world are Catholic, wouldn't that make Catholicism the norm? (I know, I know, America is mainly Protestant ::edit- or the UK; sorry for assuming the OP was an American!::)

I'm a convert from atheism, and before that, Protestantism. My family is Seventh-day Adventist, which is a brand of Protestantism that teaches that the Pope is the Antichrist, the Catholic Church is the harlot of Babylon, and that Jesuits will be coming for Protestants' heads some time in the near future.

edit- I converted mainly because the Catholic Church has the only sensical claims to historicity. I'd hate to be a Protestant anywhere between the years of 33 and 1517 A.D. (and even so, most modern Protestants would think the original Protestant churches to be too Catholic.) Once you fully grasp that notion, you'll realize that that's a HUGE amount of time for Christianity to just be wrong and be suspicious when a couple of hokeys suddenly discover the "true meaning of the Bible." I believe that God intended His Church to stay, and that Jesus' followers got it right the first time.

As for how I feel, I feel great. I highly prefer the traditional form of worship to the happy-go-lucky Christian rock concerts that the few Christian friends I have enjoy. It's helped me be more awake and focused on the mystery of, among other things, God's incarnation and His passion for us.
