Personally, I love this series.

My favourite, by far, is Symphony of the Night. It also has, in my opinion, the top soundtrack of any game.

Currently, I own:
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest - NES
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse - NES
Castlevania: The Adventure- Gameboy
Super Castlevania 4 (悪魔城ドラキュラ) - Super Famicom & Wii Virtual Console
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (悪魔城ドラキュラX 血の輪廻) - PC Engine Super CD & Wii Virtual Console
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night- Sony Playstation & Playstation Network(PS3)
Castlevania Chronicles - Playstation Network
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - Gameboy Advance
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance - Gameboy Advance

I have played through all of the GBA and DS Castlevania games, but I don't own them all. I hope to pick up Symphony of the Night for the Sega Saturn sometimes as well as a hard copy of Dracula X on the PC Engine/Turbographx-16.

Does anyone else like Castlevania, or am I lonely here?

Castlevania is one of my favorite series right behind... well at this point only Resident Evil.

I would say Final Fantasy is in that list, but that property has become mediocre at best.

That is beside the point. SotN is amazing, yes, but it was far too easy. Castlevania 1 was good, but too hard. 2 was awesome. 3, I think was near perfection. It was fun and difficult but not impossible.

I do like the Metroidvania feel that the series has taken since SotN, but I would love to see a new entry with the old level based design.

Never got into Resident Evil. To be honest, I've only played the first one believe it or not... and I own about 450 games.

How so? I quite like Final Fantasy games. VI being my favourite, then maybe IV with VII and X following behind. The only main one I haven't played (or own) is IX and XII. In other words, I have at least one version of FFI through X, minux IX. I have the two DS remakes of III and IV. They are excellent. Much above mediocre. Plus they did a sequel to FFIV recently. I'm not sure how you consider that mediocre! Still, like you said, this is all besides the point! :D Maybe we just disagree here.

That is beside the point. SotN is amazing, yes, but it was far too easy.
Does a game have to be difficult to be good? I usually die a few times going through it, especially in the inverted castle. Of course, those deaths are few and far between. Mostly, it's just a nice, long enjoyable romp through the demon's castle. Great music, good control, nice graphics, fun game!

Castlevania 1 was good, but too hard. 2 was awesome. 3, I think was near perfection. It was fun and difficult but not impossible.
1 pretty good, yeah. II... hmmm... lots of good things about it and lots of stupid things. You basically need a hint book or FAQ to get through it! At least, I do. III... yup, absolutely rocks! If III is near perfection for you, you really ought to get your hands of Dracula X: Rondo of Blood somehow. I assume you also like IV?

I do like the Metroidvania feel that the series has taken since SotN, but I would love to see a new entry with the old level based design.
To be honest, is there really a need? We've got I(NES, Amiga, MSX) III (NES), IV (SNES), X (Turboduo, PSP), XX (SNES), Bloodlines (Genesis), and Chronicles (PSX, 68000). Do we really need a new entry in this style? If you're taking remakes... YES! Upgraded graphics on the PSN/X-Box Live AND also on disc form! That would be wicked.

So... is Resident Evil 4 really that good? People rate its so highly.

As for Final Fantasy becoming mediocre, the last one that felt epic at all was 9. Ive played every one of them, including all of the remakes with the only exception being the WonderSwan releases. It just feels like they have given up on the series. It's just a money boat to them now. And yeah, I love the DS remakes of 3 and 4.

4 is a personal favorite of mine because it was the first game in the series which I played. 10 was ok... but not great. 11 was... ugh... if I had to rate all the decisions in life which I regret, playing 11 would be #1 by a large margin. 12 was fun, but only in a sort of "addiction" way. I only played it to complete it. The hunts and what not.

13 isnt looking very appealing...
Based on everything Ive seen of 13 so far it just looks like a rehash of 7 with new characters.

As far as Castlevania goes: Ive played every one. Including the arcade ones with the help of MAME.

I suppose you are right when you say that a game doesnt need to be hard to be good, but I do enjoy a good challenge when I play a game.

And finally: Resident Evil 4 is every bit the hype.

It was the first, and so far only game to exceed my initial expectations.

I do miss the old style of RE though. It has gone from being survival horror to Action Horror, and now with 5 the adhesive holding the "horror" tag on is starting to ware and its just sorta becoming an action series.

5 is good, and the updates to the controls and such, as well as the online play is awesome, but I still rate 4 as being better.
