I strove to be perfect, unsullied, pristine,
Refined as a metal most precious, esteemed,
Pure as fresh snow from a mountain to stream
Transformed in sun’s crystalline undefiled beams.
I strove to erect oaken internal walls
Protecting all affective urges, installed
Formidable moats with drawn bridges, recalled
All troops to the ready, my vigilance sprawled.
Thus well encased, impregnable, glowing
With songs to Eternal One constantly flowing,
Nought could indent The Creator’s bestowing
On soul so Rapunzelled, in peace overflowing.
One cloudless day fly in ointment appeared,
A tickle, an inkling, nervousness reared.
How dare this intruder attack with a ripple!
Could fortress so carefully constructed be crippled?
Ripple evolved to a merciless rumble,
Towers magnificent started to tumble,
Seismic intensity steadily humbled
Strongest, proudest, unstoppable stumbled.
From out of the ruins, in rain, I meandered,
Sought shelter beneath a few branches, in candor
Admitted façade I had proffered, far grander
Fair blossoms above me, sweet oleander.
Befriended by others whose castles had blown,
Learning a wisdom I never had known,
Freed from perfection I fell into Grace,
In Mercy discovered how flaws are erased.
