carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero

“Harvest the day, give trust to the future as little as possible”

From Horace Odes 1:11

So what do you think? is it not a balance between planning and sponteneity?

A while back I was considering long term care insurance.
So we can have insurance in case we die, insurance in case we get sick or have an accident, and insurance in case we LIVE TOO LONG.

We can make all kinds of sacrifices in the present in the hope of bringing a better future. But nothing is certain.

I guess we all find ourselves on some kind of spectrum preferred "credula postero".

We can give up our favorite junk foods in hopes of a healthier future....or not.
We find our own level of due diligence.

The older I get the more "carpe" I become.

How about you?

It depends on how you look at it... In the context of Roman and western hedonism, it's a detestable philosophy that causes a great deal of externalities.

There was once a Japanese prince during a plague who decided to live in wanton excess, in the face of the prospect of death, and was told by a monk that partying it up would mean he would be reborn as a fly in the next life. He said he simply didn't care because he was having fun now.

Jesus story of the rich man building bigger and better barns is another pertinent example, perhaps one more relatable.

But also

Luke 14:28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

We need a wise balance.
