Unlike real religious folk, such as yourself. He had no need to mysticize the universe. He was in awe at the magnificence of it all but unless there's some superstition attached to this awe, there's no religion.Sounds like a religion to me. Carl's number one goal was not to teach people about the workings of the universe, but to debunk the Bible and push people into worshiping the "Cosmos" in lieu of God.
If you need the real tragedy of Jonestown, you would not be making light of by comparing a man who was in awe of nature to someone who manipulated people intro literally killing themselves. To do so is just asinine and vile.He was nothing more than a religious cult leader and a new breed of sky worshiper and unfortunately a lot of folks drank and still drink his poisonous Kool-Aide.
He stayed atheist all throughout. Not everyone clings to mysticism and superstition to quell their fear of death and the unknown, like yourself. This is simply a world view that people latched on to.
I hope he found God before he died, I really do.
In all honesty, if I had to choose between worshipping the cosmos or worshipping the Christian God, I'd worship the cosmos. I find space and the universe a to be thousand times more mystical, fascinating and worthy of worship than God. Everything attributed to God can be just as easily attrributed to the cosmos, you just have to personify it a bit.

not making light at all....Carl is the from the same camp
Sounds a lot like George Carlin:
"So rather than be just another mindless religious robot, mindlessly and aimlessly and blindly believing that all of this is in the hands of some spooky incompetent father figure who doesn't give a ****, I decided to look around for something else to worship. Something I could really count on.
And immediately, I thought of the sun. Happened like that. Overnight I became a sun-worshipper. Well, not overnight, you can't see the sun at night. But first thing the next morning, I became a sun-worshipper. Several reasons. First of all, I can see the sun, okay? Unlike some other gods I could mention, I can actually see the sun. I'm big on that. If I can see something, I don't know, it kind of helps the credibility along, you know? So everyday I can see the sun, as it gives me everything I need; heat, light, food, flowers in the park, reflections on the lake, an occasional skin cancer, but hey. At least there are no crucifixions, and we're not setting people on fire simply because they don't agree with us.
Sun worship is fairly simple. There's no mystery, no miracles, no pageantry, no one asks for money, there are no songs to learn, and we don't have a special building where we all gather once a week to compare clothing. And the best thing about the sun, it never tells me I'm unworthy. Doesn't tell me I'm a bad person who needs to be saved. Hasn't said an unkind word. Treats me fine. So, I worship the sun. But, I don't pray to the sun. Know why? I wouldn't presume on our friendship. It's not polite."
So a guy who is inpired by his life's work waxes eloquently, and it becomes a religion? Good to know what religious folk consider as religion.Carl Sagan: The cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be.
Carl Sagan: Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for Earth. Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring.
Carl Sagan: We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.
Carl Sagan: The cosmos is interesting rather than perfect, and everything is not part of some greater plan, nor is all necessarily under control.
Carl Sagan: In many cultures it is customary to answer that God created the universe out of nothing. But this is mere temporizing. If we wish courageously to pursue the question, we must, of course ask next where God comes from? And if we decide this to be unanswerable, why not save a step and conclude that the universe has always existed?
Carl Sagan: Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

You think Carl Sagan wanted everyone to kill themselves because he feared that the feds and/or military were going to take everyone who supported him to jail and take their kids away?not making light at all....Carl is the from the same camp

Romans 1:25 said:Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature* more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
More book quoting instead of actual thoughts or arguments.I know.

It's wonderful --- as long as you worship the right Sun.Sun worship is fairly simple.
Malachi 4:2 said:But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
Nothing wrong with that --- as long as you worship the right One.Admittedly, Sun worship would be at the top of my 'things I'd worship if I had to worship something' list.
What? You want another Neptune remark? Getting tired [already] of me quoting the Bible?More book quoting instead of actual thoughts or arguments.
So long as what you're saying is either logically sound or empirically verifiable, I won't complain. Instead, you either quote a book or make up excuses for the book. What? You want another Neptune remark? Getting tired [already] of me quoting the Bible?
Either way, you'll complain.
I know.
