• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can't we do better than insulting each other?

I understand this current war is a senstive issue, but we've really got to cool down a little around here.

I see two problems:

1)  Ongoing assertions that anti-war types are cowards or communists (??) or whatever...

2)  Other assertions that war-supporters are murderers or brain-dead Bush-bots or whatever...

#1 is inherently false and insulting (and for me it comes down to a matter of lost lives and a very, very poor global image - not cowardice).

#2 certainly has it's problems as well as most people genuinely believe that they are in grave danger with Saddam still around in his current capacity (amoung other reasons I'm sure).

I am very much interested in sharing my views on why I think the pro-war camp is a bit "mislead" or why I feel their fear is "misplaced".  At the same time I know there are others here that would like to gently attempt to pursuade me otherwise.

But this name-calling really, really, needs to stop.

(geesh, seeing how tempers and insults fly on this board is it any wonder how wars get started?)

Very good point.:) Sometimes it's good to step away from the computer for a while. None of us have the power to start the war, and none of us have the power to stop the war. But we DO have power over our own attitudes.

Well, FWIW, I've been bearing down on myself and not posting a lot of what I actually think, just because I know it will be taken as flaming. :)

So far, it's been good. There are some members who will be coming off suspension one of these days, however, and when that happens, I will evaporate from this forum like smoke.

I know an exercise in futility when I see one. ;)

In the past few weeks it's been crazy in this forum. I have typed in a responce and then back-spaced it out, typed it in again then hit the x on top right of the window and just walked away. Yes Starscream, we have to do better. Thanks for the thread!

OK I am going to have to do something here!

There is this one poster who has such a hatred for the United States that it is impossible for me to be nice. He runs all over the Internet just finding things to post to tear down our government.

Sorry but he makes me sick!

How can I be nice when he is trying to rip apart our country from the inside?

Help!!! :help:

I think it's important to remember that this country was founded on political protest against England, and that the anti-war people here are merely exercising an American right and obligation to protest what they see as wrong with the US government. I also think it's important to remember that people who support the war are not evil (well, most of them ;) ) and have sincere beliefs that the war is right. There are many people even in my own "liberal" religious denomination who support this war on humanitarian grounds (Unitarian Universalist). (In fact, they were a bit angry that their views weren't reflected in our denomination's official publication, The World.)

You have a right to disagree with me, even if I think you're wrong for doing so. :) I hope you can agree to the same about me.

i understand.  i felt the same way when people were talking bout north korea.  whether the decisions made by the prez in n. korea are right or wrong, i hate to see people bash the country (even though i'm s. korean).

....and i feel the same way when people bash prez bush for his decisions.  whether you agree or not, show him some respect people.

Those are the hardest ones to be civil with, I know what ya mean. I think it was king David who was traveling in Isreal when a man approached the kings company (troops) and started slandering the king and declaring him an unworthy loser (or something to that effect). The kings' company drew swords to 'deal' with the nitwitt, but David said something like, he speaks some truth and let him be. Turning the other cheek isn't easy, but it's ussually the right thing to do. (Not that we always succeed).
