Can sin be committed in thought?

Can you commit sin in your thinking? I ask because I know sometimes our thoughts can cause all kinds of errors and such.. If someone had blasphemous thinking and they feel bad about it, Can it be forgiven of him if they repent?

p.s. - when sinful temptations come into your mind, take them "captive" and give them over to the Lord to deal with. If you allow the temptation to turn into a sinful thought, then .. 1 John 1:9.

Yes we are to take every thought captive to the Obedience of Christ. God destoryed the ancient world because: Gen6:5 "And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."

All of the above is true, but don't mistake hearing someone else's (including demon's) blasphemies as your own. There are some on-line blasphemies [blasphe-memes?] that I just can't unread, but I won't write them or repeat them. (It is a hazard of being "in the World, though not of it.")

In 2 Corinthians 10:5 we are instructed to take every thought captive and make it obedient to God. So there is nothing sinful about having a thought pop into our minds, but what can be sinful is what we choose to do with that thought. For example, the Tenth Commandments prohibits coveting, but coveting is more than having a thought pop into your head that you want something.

For me, repeating them seems to perpetuate them. I tell God (in prayer) that I have been grossed out by blasphemy [defiling His Name] and ask Him to wash it from my hearing/reading/memory. (If it still persists, there may be other problems.)

Being a witness to someone else's grievous* sin doesn't make you a participant. It is just disturbing.

*Example: I don't find the concept of someone cheating on their taxes as visually grievous. OTOH, it would be very much so to be forced to watch someone physically torture another person (even if it could somehow be justified).

Most sins I think occur in thought. Of course they can be forgiven if one repents. If one does not repent, then the nature of thought is to continue to dwell upon the thought. Usually action will follow, but even if it doesn't, the thought remains unrepented of because the spirit is wrong. Christ wants us to have and seek a new spirit. Not the spirit of a stone, a snake or a scorpion but a Holy Spirit. This is worth asking, seeking and knocking for.

9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Blasphemous Thoughts happen to a lot of people. Only the thoughts that you agree to are yours. (2 corinthians 10:5)
Yes, you can sin by thought.
