Let me put it this way. I am a Civil Engineer, I will be make plenty more money than the guys out doing the construction. Is this because I am hard working? I have to admit, it is not. I will be making much more money and live a much easier life than them because I was blessed with an intellect. I've almost never studied and I've hardly ever done homework, heck, I've missed classes whenever I've had half a reason. But lucky me, I've always tested well, and math and physics come naturally to me. So tell me, why should a lazy fool like me be living the good life, while some guy who works his hands to the bone and comes home stinking to high heaven every day has to fight to keep health benifits and save up enough money to send their kids to college?
It's not because you are hard working, it's because you are educated. For at least four years, you were in college making no money, and probably going into debt, while your friend that got the construction job straight out of high school was making money and getting on with his life. Higher ed. is about delayed gratification. If you take away the gratification, folks aren't going to put up with the delay.
Furthermore, why is money all that matters to socialists? Take my brother and I, for instance. I'm not great with money. It's not terribly important to me, which is good because I don't have much. Money is important to him, so he has more money than me, but I have more friends than him. If we become socialist and the government gives me half of his money, why don't they give him half of my friends? If you only worry about making finances equal, you've actually made people's lives less equal than they were before.
The same is true for you and the construction worker. They might give him the same amount of money as you have, but they can't give you the same amount of time that he has had. They can't make your life four years longer to compensate for your education, nor can they make your day longer to compensate for the fact that you sometimes have to think about your job when you aren't at the office.
In our present system, society can't give you more time or take away the extra stress inherent to your job, so they give you more money to make up for it. Under socialism, society can't give you more time or take away the extra stress inherent to your job, so sucks for you. Equalizing one factor does not make society equal, it makes society collapse.
