Actually, the only thing I may have ever protested about SP is one of the more offensive things about Jesus portrayed.

The main things that concern me are those aired during prime time (which excludes SP, unless I'm very much mistaken). Those that are on during times when children are likely to be up and watching tv need to be of a certain calibre (or at least discretion). If somebody wants to air horrible programming after 10pm (while I don't like it) I'm much less likely to protest than if it were at, say, 7pm or 8pm.

Actually, what I'd really like is to have "channel choice", where the channels aren't bundled a certain way, but I'd pay for and receive only the channels I wanted. There's been something going through Congress on that subject, I think.

My dad called me kitten when I was younger - I LOVED it. He still occasionally will call me that, and never have I felt dehumanized or belittled by it - it's nostalgic for both of us, making us remember my childhood, and it makes me feel loved. My grown sister and I also have pet names for each other, that we've used since we were little. It's something affectionate and loving that's just between us - a little secret code we share that's a tangible way to show our love. I don't know what your problem is, but I seriously doubt that very many people have problems with pet names when they're used lovingly.

Yes, I understand that sweeping generalizations are wrong and often offend innocent parties....BUT, I was made to attend a Baptist church when I was in my early teens. And I know for a fact that some, maybe not all, but some baptist churches use tactics similar to brainwashing to get their ideas ingrained in your head. I used to leave church scared and confused..and actually through a lot of things away that I enjoyed (like my Jimi Hendrix cd's, which I have since then replaced ). So what fanatiquefou was saying isn't completely out of line...people just need to make sure they don't lump everyone in with one group.

Certain Christians seem to get the idea that making themselves miserable and staying away from things that are enjoyable and fun (secular movies, music, dancing) is some kind of testament to their faith and commitment to God. They think that "I was able to stop listening to that music with naughty words, that means I have super-faith and that puts me above the others guys who still listen to the devil's music!! )

I would absolutely love this.

I hate getting stuck paying for 500 channels that I'll never watch just so I can get the handful of channels I actually do.

I'm not familiar with the legislation that goes along with it, so I can't say offhand with any certainty whether or not I'd support, but if that's the gist of it, it sounds pretty acceptable to me.

I don't understand his problems with pet names for beloved people either. Usually, the names are associated with (little) pets we find cute and cuddly. So the only thing those names suggest is, that the human being which is called that way, is also cute and cuddly. There's nothing disciminating or de-humanising about it all, very far from it!

No, what she's talking about is a sort of a la carte cable package, where you pick the channels you really want and know you'll watch, and pay only for them, and don't end up paying more for hundreds of channels you'll never watch. I would LOVE this. I don't bother with cable now because it's too expensive, but if I could pick even just five or six channels I'd watch frequently, and pay only for those, that'd be great.

Uh, just want to clarify here - I never said anything about baptist brainwashing - that was the OP who said that. I don't agree with his choice of words either.

My husband calls me "kitten" and "chickadee." He's used those names for 5 years. I've yet to have the supposed identity crisis it brings up, and not once do I believe my husband has called me "kitten" or "chickadee" with the mistaken impression I am a non-human.

Really, of all the things to make a stand on, be upset by, or be offended at the use at... I think a stand against pet names has to be one of the most absurd.

Well, Jerusha, that´s all nice and well, but since you are de-humanized by your husband´s pet-names, your opinion doesn´t count in human conversation anymore, anyways.

Why do I need to pay for (or have something delivered into my home) which I find offensive? I don't have to pay for Playboy or Maxim in order to get Better Homes and Gardens. Also, maybe I don't want my children (who are getting old enough to use the remote control) having any possibility (by changing guides to "all channels" or any other way) of seeing certain channels?

Actually, sometimes it's about having a show taken off the air. Sometimes it's about having them "clean up their acts". Other times it's just about not wanting to pay for something I disagree with. I should have the right to spend my $$ where I want, just as advertisers and producers and tv stations do.

Nobody's forcing you to pay for tv you don't want, you make the choice and that's it. If you mean spending money on cable/satellite then get over it, when you have 500 channels there's going to be programming that you don't like and you can change the channel, turn off the tv or not pay for cable/satellite.

Some of you guys are going to laugh at this one.....I heard something yesterday that puzzled me.

For the last couple years my parents have been taking my 15 year old brother to a very conservative baptist church to receive brainwashing. When he got home from church the one week, he was telling me that they told him that watching the show South Park was evil, and also that his favorite band Slipknot was evil as well (I'm guessing because of the profanity). When they tell him these things, I make sure to balance him out with some common sense, and he's a pretty smart kid and can already start seeing through some of their lies.....Plus, he loves watching South Park with me .

Why do fundamentalists think that "bad" words can be harmful to listen to? They're just sounds like any other word. It just seems kind of silly to me.

They say that if you sow a thought, you reap an action. Eventually you're going to get out what you put in. Thoughts are like gas in your car. If you put dirt in your gas tank your car will have problems. It will be all filthy inside. The same for your mind. If you constantly expose yourself to base and degrading speech you will eventually have that frame of mind. It's like with pornography: it's been proven time and time again that men who frequently look at pornography have less respect for women. If you constantly watch South Park, which disrespects just about everything, it will affect your general attitude, like it or not.
